This four day loop from Marrakech packs kasbahs, mountain passes, gorges and desert dunes into a compact tour. Day one crosses the Tizi n'Tichka Pass to the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou, then continues through the Skoura Oasis and Valley of Roses to the Dades Valley.
Day two visits the Todra Gorges before reaching Merzouga for a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes and a night at a Berber desert camp. Day three returns via Rissani, N'Kob and the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate, and day four completes the loop back across the High Atlas to Marrakech.
Graded medium, this tour suits travellers who want a broad taste of southern Morocco's landmarks alongside a genuine desert camp experience, without committing to a longer expedition. An English-speaking guide and driver lead throughout, with camel handlers taking over for the dunes.
Accommodation shifts from valley guesthouses to a desert camp and back, giving a real sense of the changing landscapes crossed each day.
This four day version covers a similar core route of kasbahs, gorges and dunes but in a more compact format, returning via N'Kob and the Draa Valley rather than continuing further south to Zagora, making it a shorter option for travellers with less time.
Travellers wanting more time at each stop may prefer the longer 6-day version instead.
The camel trek lasts about 1.5 hours, leading from Merzouga into the dunes of Erg Chebbi to reach a traditional Berber desert camp, where you spend the night with dinner and music around the campfire before an early sunrise view the next morning.
It's a gentle ride suitable for most ages and fitness levels.
Yes, the tour is graded medium and is mostly road-based with a gentle camel trek, making it accessible for families with older children. The minimum age is 10.
The desert camp night is often a highlight for younger travellers.
Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage fortified village, or ksar, that has featured as a filming location for productions including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones, and is one of the best-preserved examples of traditional earthen architecture in the region.
It's one of the most photographed stops on the whole route.
The desert camp consists of traditional Berber tents set up among the dunes of Erg Chebbi, with dinner and music provided around the campfire before a night under the stars.
It's simple but comfortable, designed for the desert setting.
Several days involve substantial driving as the route crosses from Marrakech to the Sahara and back, though the itinerary includes regular stops at kasbahs, gorges and viewpoints to break up the journey.
Comfortable private transport is used for all road sections.
Light, breathable clothing for warm desert days, warm layers for cool desert evenings, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
A scarf or headwear for dust and sun in the dunes, and a small overnight bag for the desert camp, are also worth packing.
