Sunrise on a 3,210 m ridge above Ghorepani is the heart of this 4, 8 or 9 day Poon Hill trek from Kathmandu. Each length is a complete walk with an English-speaking guide, TIMS and conservation permits, and lodge nights on the trail. The minimum age is 13, groups run from 1 to 15, and pickup is from your Kathmandu hotel.
Each length is a complete walk to Poon Hill above Ghorepani at 3,210 metres. We'll collect you from your Kathmandu hotel, walk with an English-speaking guide, arrange TIMS and Annapurna Conservation Area permits, and sleep in lodges on the trail. The pre-dawn climb from Ghorepani takes about 45 minutes, and you return to the lodge for breakfast after the viewpoint.
The 4-day trek uses the tourist coach to Pokhara both ways, a night by the lake, and a walk from Ulleri to Ghorepani for the sunrise, then the jeep and coach home. Lunch and dinner in Pokhara are your own on that length. The 8-day trek starts at Nayapul, stays in lodges through Ghorepani and Ghandruk, includes a porter, and includes the Kathmandu to Pokhara ticket.
The 9-day trek adds two 3-star nights in Kathmandu and two in Pokhara on bed and breakfast, with lodge nights on full board. A flight between the cities is available as an extra. On every length you'll walk rhododendron forest, terrace farms, and Gurung villages. On a clear morning you can see Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna range, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre from the ridge.
Above Ghorepani the ridge of Poon Hill sits in the Annapurna Conservation Area, west of Pokhara. The trail passes rhododendron forest, terrace farms, and Gurung villages. On a clear morning you can see Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna range, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre from 3,210 metres.
Pickup is from hotels inside Kathmandu. You'll travel to Pokhara by tourist coach, or by air if that is how your days are set. The trailhead is reached by road from Pokhara toward Nayapul or Ulleri, matching the days you book.
You need to be 13 or older. Travellers under 18 must travel with an adult. You do not need previous trekking experience. You should be happy walking for several hours on uneven paths and stone steps, and you should be able to manage a pre-dawn climb to the viewpoint.
The walk is not suitable if you have a heart or back condition, or if you are pregnant. Please tell us about any medical or dietary needs before you come. Travel insurance that covers trekking and emergency evacuation is required. Bring a passport valid for at least six months and the photos we need for permits.
TIMS cards and Annapurna Conservation Area permits are arranged from our Lazimpat office, along with the lodge beds and the Kathmandu hotel pickup. English-speaking guides from that street walk with groups of 1 to 15 so the pace can follow the people on the path that day.
The same Kathmandu team has been sending walkers into these foothills for more than two decades. You'll be collected from your hotel inside the city, with extra bags left behind if you want to travel light on the trail.
We'll collect you from your Kathmandu hotel and put you on the tourist coach to Pokhara. You'll stay in a 3-star hotel by the lake, then drive to Ulleri and walk through forest and villages to Ghorepani. Before dawn you'll climb to Poon Hill for sunrise, walk back down to Ulleri, jeep to Pokhara, and return to Kathmandu by coach the next day.
You'll start from Nayapul, cross the Modi Khola, and walk through Gurung farmland and woods to Ghorepani. Lodge nights cover the week on the trail, and the Kathmandu to Pokhara ticket is included.

On the trail you'll sleep in teahouse lodges in villages such as Ghorepani. Rooms are simple twin or double shares with shared bathrooms. Meals are cooked in the lodge kitchen, and evenings are spent around the dining room with your group and other walkers.
Hotel nights use a 3-star property in Pokhara, and on the 9-day trek you also have two nights in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu, both on a bed and breakfast basis. Solo travellers get a single room. You'll have time by Phewa Lake on Pokhara nights if your trek includes a stay there.

The walking is graded easy. You will spend several hours on the trail on trek days, with stone steps around Ulleri and Ghorepani. You do not need previous trekking experience. A reasonable level of fitness helps.
The pre-dawn climb to Poon Hill is short but steep. Take it steadily and bring a warm layer.
Poon Hill sits at 3,210 metres. You walk up from Ghorepani in the dark for sunrise, which takes about 45 minutes. The air is cooler and thinner than Kathmandu, so take the climb steadily.
The lodges sit below the ridge, so you return to Ghorepani for breakfast after the viewpoint.
We'll arrange the TIMS card and Annapurna Conservation Area permit. Please have a clear colour scan of your passport (valid for at least six months) and passport photos ready the day before you leave. We'll collect them from your Kathmandu hotel.
Keep the original passport with you on the trail as well.
Bring sturdy walking boots, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, snacks, and a small first aid kit. Pack light. You can leave extra bags at your Kathmandu hotel.
A warm layer helps on the Poon Hill morning, even after a mild day in Pokhara.
A porter is included on the 8-day trek. On the 4-day trek and the 9-day trek a porter is available as an extra if you want one. Your guide walks with you on every trek.
Keep the daypack light: water, layers, and a camera are enough for the walking hours.
The minimum age is 13. Travellers under 18 need to travel with an adult.
Younger walkers should be used to several hours on stone steps and happy to stay in simple lodge rooms.
Cloud and rain can hide the sunrise. We'll still walk the planned days when it is safe. If a day cannot run, we'll move it or talk through the next step with you.
The lodges stay the same even if the viewpoint is in cloud.
The 4-day trek uses a tourist coach in both directions. The 8-day trek includes the Kathmandu to Pokhara ticket. The 9-day trek uses the tourist bus as standard, with a flight available as an extra. The coach journey is about five to six hours.
We'll confirm the vehicle or coach time with you the evening before you leave the city.
