The forest rim of the Kathmandu Valley carries this three-day hike from Sundarijal through Shivapuri to a Chisapani tea house, then on to Nagarkot. We'll collect you at the hotel, walk about four and a half hours on day one and six hours on day two, and bring you home by private car after sunrise over Manaslu, Langtang, and Gaurishankar. Ages 6 and up walk the same trail.
We'll collect you from your Kathmandu hotel and drive about an hour to Sundarijal. You'll enter Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve, pass the Tamang village of Mulkharka, and walk a ridge of oak and rhododendron down to Chisapani. The walking time is about four and a half hours, and you'll sleep in a tea house or lodge there.
After breakfast you'll walk from Chisapani toward Chauki Bhanjyang, about three hours, then continue along the ridge to Nagarkot. The full walking day is about six hours. In clear weather the Himalaya sits on the skyline, and you'll sleep in a hotel in Nagarkot.
You'll wake for sunrise over Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Gaurishankar when the sky is open, then have breakfast. A private car drives you back to your Kathmandu hotel. Lunch and dinner are included on day one, all three meals on day two, and breakfast on day three.
Oak and rhododendron cover the first hours from Sundarijal, on the north-east rim of the Kathmandu Valley, into Shivapuri forest. The path is woodland trail and Tamang settlement, not a high pass, and Mulkharka is the village you pass inside the park.
Chisapani is a ridge lodge stop above the valley. Nagarkot is a hill station looking toward Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Gaurishankar, with the city bowl visible below when the air is clear.
You do not need previous trekking experience. You should be happy walking four and a half hours on day one and about six hours on day two, with two nights in simple hill lodges.
The minimum age is 6. Bring a passport, sturdy shoes, and a warm layer for the evenings. Younger walkers should be used to a full day on forest paths and happy to sleep away from the city.
Ridge nights get their tea-house and hotel beds from our Lazimpat office before you leave Kathmandu, so Chisapani and Nagarkot are waiting when you walk in. English-speaking guides from that same street stay with you from the hotel lobby through the forest, both lodge nights, and the sunrise drive home.
Permits and the listed meals sit with a team that has been walking this valley rim for more than two decades. Pickup is from your Kathmandu hotel, the road sections use a private vehicle, and groups stay at 15 or fewer so mixed ages can keep a steady pace.

The first night is in a tea house or lodge in Chisapani, after the walk through Shivapuri forest. Dinner is at the lodge. Rooms are simple, with a bed and blankets; bathrooms may be shared.
The second night is in a hotel in Nagarkot, so you can step out early for sunrise over Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Gaurishankar. Bring a warm layer for both evenings, because the ridge cools quickly after sunset.
Day one is a one-hour drive to Sundarijal and about four and a half hours of walking through Shivapuri to Chisapani. Day two is about six hours from Chisapani to Nagarkot, including a stretch to Chauki Bhanjyang.
Day three is sunrise at Nagarkot, breakfast, and a private-car drive back to your Kathmandu hotel. Lunch and dinner are included on day one; all three meals on day two; breakfast on day three.
You'll sleep in a tea house or lodge in Chisapani on the first night, after the walk through oak and rhododendron forest. The second night is in a hotel in Nagarkot, ready for an early start.
Rooms are simple hill rooms with a bed and blankets. Bring a warm layer; both ridges lose heat after dark. Bathrooms may be shared in the tea house.
The minimum age is 6. Children walk the same trail as the adults, with hotel pickup in Kathmandu and two nights on the ridge.
The walking is graded easy, but day two is about six hours. Younger walkers should be used to a full day on forest paths and happy to sleep away from the city.
You do not need previous trekking experience. You should be able to walk four and a half hours on day one and about six hours on day two, with a night in a tea house between them.
The paths go through Shivapuri forest, Tamang villages, and open ridge. We'll walk at a pace the group can hold. A hiking pole helps on the descents.
On a clear morning from Nagarkot you can see Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Gaurishankar, plus the Kathmandu Valley below the ridge.
Day one also passes Mulkharka, a Tamang village inside the park, and oak and rhododendron forest on the way down to Chisapani.
We'll collect you from your Kathmandu hotel and drive about an hour to Sundarijal, the usual starting point on the rim of the valley. Have the hotel name ready when you book.
Pickup covers hotels inside the city. If you are staying outside the ring road, tell us so we can plan the extra drive.
Bring a water bottle, snacks, trek trousers, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a daypack, a torch, a small first-aid kit, and a power bank. A hiking pole is useful on day two.
Your passport is required. Layered clothes and a warm jacket help at Chisapani and Nagarkot in the evening.
You can cancel up to 24 hours before the trip for a full refund, in line with the Flexible policy.
If cloud or rain sits on the ridge, the walking days still run; sunrise may be hidden. We'll keep the same lodge plan and watch the morning sky with you.
Lunch and dinner are included on day one. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included on day two. Breakfast is included on day three before the drive home.
Trail snacks, extra drinks, and tips are not included. Tell us about dietary needs when you book so the tea house can plan.
This is a guided lodge walk, not a qualification course. You will not receive a trekking award.
Your English-speaking guide stays with you from the Kathmandu pickup through both walking days and the sunrise drive home.
