Walk one of the most iconic routes in the Cairngorms with this supported self-guided package through the Lairig Ghru. Centred around a comfortable lodge stay, this trip combines expert logistical support with in-depth local knowledge and freshly prepared meals, allowing you to focus entirely on the trail. The 18-mile crossing is one of the most spectacular point-to-point hikes in the Highlands, made more accessible through included transfers and a detailed pre-walk briefing.
Eve of Arrival: Arrive at Fraoch Lodge in the afternoon and settle in with tea or coffee. In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared meal before a detailed route briefing with a qualified mountain leader. You’ll be given a map and time to ask questions to help you feel fully prepared for the walk.
Day 1: After an early breakfast, you’ll be driven to Linn of Dee (approx. 90 minutes) to begin the 18-mile route. The walk starts along Glen Lui, passing abandoned townships and the ruins of Derry Lodge before entering the southern mouth of the Lairig Ghru. As Devil’s Point appears ahead, the classic glaciated “U” shape of the pass opens up. You’ll climb gently and then more steadily towards the Pools of Dee—the highest point of the walk—before beginning your descent.
The trail leads beneath steep scree slopes and the cliffs of Lurcher’s Crag, eventually dropping into the ancient Scots pinewoods of Rothiemurchus. The walk ends at Whitewell, where you’ll be picked up and driven back to the lodge for hot drinks, cake, and another hearty evening meal.
Morning of Departure: Depart after a relaxed breakfast.
The trip is based out of Fraoch Lodge in Boat of Garten, within the Cairngorms National Park. This small village offers direct access to a wide network of trails and is only a short distance from Aviemore, making it a well-connected yet peaceful location to begin your Highlands walking adventure.
The surrounding area includes ancient Caledonian forest, open moorland, and some of Scotland’s highest peaks, making it an excellent base for those looking to walk, relax, and explore.
Guests stay at Fraoch Lodge, a friendly and well-equipped base run by experienced outdoor professionals. The lodge offers comfortable shared spaces, drying facilities, and freshly cooked meals prepared with local produce—some of it grown on site.
Tea, coffee, and home-baked cake are available after your walk, and the communal atmosphere makes it easy to share the experience with fellow walkers. On-site parking is available, and the nearest train station is Aviemore.
You’ll need to be in good physical condition and capable of walking up to 18 miles over mountainous terrain. While the route is non-technical, weather conditions in the Cairngorms can change quickly, so appropriate clothing and footwear are essential.
This is a self-guided trip, so experience in reading maps and navigating marked mountain trails is highly recommended.
The team combines decades of guiding experience in the Scottish Highlands and abroad with in-depth knowledge of the landscape, geology, and history of the Cairngorms. Trips are carefully planned and supported by professionals with backgrounds in education and environmental science, ensuring you gain more than just a good route—you get a deeper understanding of where you’re walking.
With outstanding hospitality, detailed logistics, and a real focus on quality, this trip makes it easier to complete one of Scotland’s best-known long walks in a relaxed, enjoyable way.
