This short winter course is two consecutive mountain days with no classroom. Day one is skills-focused: kit and crampon fit checks, a morning briefing on weather and avalanche forecasts, then time on suitable winter ground for boot and crampon footwork, axe use, and steeper-ground travel. If snow allows, ice axe arrest is covered. Emergency shelter thinking and packing habits for sharp kit are woven through the day so safety habits form while you move.
Day two consolidates those skills on a mountain journey matched to the forecast and snowpack. You practise route choices, movement skills, and avalanche avoidance on real ground while consolidating boot, axe, and crampon technique. The pace balances learning with a full mountain day so new skills settle under realistic winter fatigue rather than only on short practice slopes.
Snow is not guaranteed in Wales. If there is none, both days still run outdoors with winter-specific techniques and footwork, even when crampon or arrest practice is not possible. You finish with a debrief covering what to practise next, kit refinements, and how to choose winter objectives matched to your new skills.
Courses are led by highly experienced Winter Mountain Leaders and Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors. Ratios stay at a maximum of six clients to one instructor so coaching on steeper ground stays personal and controlled.
Teaching is practical and condition-led, with clear kit guidance so you arrive with B2 boots and suitable winter equipment for honest mountain days. Venues across Ogwen, Llanberis Pass, and the Snowdon massif are chosen each morning from the forecast and snowpack, not from a fixed tourist itinerary.
Meet for introductions, kit and crampon fit checks, and a morning briefing on weather and avalanche forecasts. You head into a suitable winter venue to practise boot and crampon footwork, axe use, and steeper-ground travel.
If snow allows, ice axe arrest is covered. Emergency shelter thinking and personal packing habits for sharp kit are woven through the day.
Return for a consolidation journey chosen from the forecast and snowpack. You practise route choices, movement skills, and avalanche avoidance on real ground while consolidating boot, axe, and crampon technique.
The pace balances learning with a full mountain day so new skills settle under realistic winter fatigue.
Finish with a debrief covering what to practise next, kit refinements, and how to choose winter objectives matched to your new skills. Optional third-day summit add-ons can be discussed with the team separately when available.
You leave with clearer habits for safer winter travel in Snowdonia conditions.
Daily venues are chosen across north Snowdonia from the Ogwen Valley, Llanberis Pass, and Snowdon massif depending on weather and snow. Exact meeting pins and times are confirmed in your joining instructions.
Base yourself in Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, or Llanberis. Allow extra time for icy roads and parking on cold mornings.
This course suits adults with a fair amount of previous three-season UK hill and mountain hiking experience who want safer winter travel skills. Good general hiking fitness is essential, and summer grade 1 scrambling experience helps.
You should already understand typical UK mountain ground and weather before adding axe and crampon techniques.
Venues are in north Snowdonia, including the Ogwen Valley, Carneddau and Glyderau, Llanberis Pass, and the Snowdon massif depending on conditions. Exact daily meets are confirmed in joining instructions.
Stay in Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, or Llanberis so early mountain days are realistic.
Day one is skills-focused in the mountains covering weather and avalanche forecast appreciation, boot and crampon footwork, axe use and self-arrest, steeper-ground travel, emergency shelters, and emergency procedures. Day two is a mountain journey to consolidate those skills.
Both days are mountain days with no classroom. Snow is not guaranteed; if there is none, teaching switches to winter-specific techniques and footwork that still apply.
Bring winter mountaineering clothing, B2-rated boots, C2 crampons, and a mountaineering axe (not a technical climbing axe). Microspikes and non-crampon-rated summer boots are not suitable.
Crampons, axe, and helmet hire may be available if arranged early. Boots are not hired by the team; a kit list PDF is provided for full detail.
Accommodation is not included. Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, and Llanberis are the usual bases within about a half-hour drive of common venues.
Book flexible lodging in case daily start points shift with snow and weather.
You need fitness for full mountain days in winter kit on mixed snow, rock, and steep ground. The pace is instructional, but winter travel is demanding when you carry sharp kit and move carefully.
Prior long summer hill days are the best preparation before you add axe and crampon work.
Winter conditions in Wales are fickle and snow cannot be guaranteed. Instructors choose venues from the forecast and snowpack each morning.
If there is no snow, the course still runs as mountain days focused on winter techniques without crampon or arrest practice. The team will be in touch if plans need to change.
Food is not included. Bring packed lunches, snacks, and hot drinks for both mountain days so you stay fuelled in cold conditions.
Evening meals are your own arrangement in local villages after each day.
Maximum ratio is six clients to one Winter Mountain Leader or Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor. Smaller groups keep coaching safe on steeper winter ground and give everyone enough hands-on axe and crampon time.
Live availability shows how many spaces remain on your date.
Transport to daily meeting points is not included. You need your own vehicle or arrangements to reach each venue on cold mornings.
Budget for parking where required, and share cars within your party when that simplifies icy early starts.
