Over two days, participants gain immersive, hands-on experience in bushcraft, survival, and woodland living. The course focuses on practical skills such as tool use, firelighting, shelter construction, and water purification, building confidence to enjoy the outdoors safely. Each session is shaped by seasonal changes, weather, and the unique mix of participants, ensuring no two courses are exactly the same.
The course begins with a short walk from the meeting point to the woodland camp, where participants are introduced to safety procedures and the basics of tool use. The first day focuses on practical exercises, including firelighting, collecting tinder, and using knives and saws under instructor supervision. Hands-on practice ensures that everyone develops confidence and competence before moving on.
On the second day, the focus shifts to shelter building, water collection, and purification, as well as practical skills such as setting up tarps and hammocks using simple knots. Participants will also undertake a guided woodland walk, learning how to identify trees and plants, and understanding their applications in bushcraft. Every skill is designed to be repeatable and transferable to other outdoor activities.
Throughout the course, the instructors adapt activities to suit the weather and seasonal conditions, ensuring that each session is engaging and relevant. By the end, participants leave with a solid foundation of bushcraft knowledge, capable of applying what they’ve learned to camping, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits.
Courses take place in Westwell, Kent, set within 35 acres of private ancient broadleaf woodland on the Kent Downs. The area is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering a peaceful and inspiring setting for learning bushcraft skills.
The woodland is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, squirrels, owls, woodpeckers, and sparrowhawks, as well as numerous native trees and wildflowers. The short walk from the meeting point leads to the camp, and bags are transported in a 4×4, leaving participants free to focus on learning.
Overnight participants stay at the woodland camp in Westwell, Kent, bringing their own tents, roll mats, and sleeping bags. The camp is tucked within 35 acres of private ancient broadleaf woodland, offering a peaceful setting where participants can relax and focus on learning. Small tents are recommended due to space between trees, and spare tents, roll mats, or sleeping bags can be hired if needed.
The camp includes covered composting toilets and areas for socialising or preparing meals. Breakfast and dinner are provided on-site, while participants bring packed lunches. The environment is designed to be practical and comfortable, ensuring a positive overnight experience while fully engaging with bushcraft activities.
No prior bushcraft or outdoor experience is needed. All training is hands-on, and participants should come prepared for outdoor activity in all weathers, wearing suitable clothing and footwear.
Children aged 12 and above may attend if accompanied by a responsible adult, while certain specialised sessions such as axe work or forge courses are restricted to participants aged 18 and over.
Founded in 2011, the instructors have extensive experience in bushcraft and a strong passion for the British countryside. Small group sizes ensure personal attention and tailored guidance, so everyone develops practical and repeatable skills in a supportive environment.
Courses are structured to combine learning with environmental responsibility. Woodland conservation and sustainable use of natural resources are integrated into all activities, leaving participants confident, knowledgeable, and able to enjoy the outdoors safely.
Courses take place in Westwell, Kent, which is easily accessible by road from the M20 and M2. For those travelling by train, Ashford International station is just 5 miles away, with a high-speed connection from St. Pancras taking around 40 minutes. Charing station is also close, approximately 4 miles from the site, and taxis can be arranged in advance if needed.
The woodland setting is slightly off the beaten track, providing a quiet environment for bushcraft learning while remaining within convenient reach of local transport links. Once you arrive, the walk to the woodland camp is about 15 minutes at a gentle pace, with the final stretch uphill. Your gear will be transported most of the way in a 4×4, so only light carrying is required.
Courses are designed to be enjoyable and educational, providing hands-on experience in bushcraft while keeping you warm, dry, and well fed. Activities vary depending on the course type but generally cover practical skills like firelighting, tool use, shelter building, and woodland awareness. Reviews from past participants highlight both the learning and the social atmosphere of the courses.
You won’t need to worry about extreme survival tests; the focus is on learning at a comfortable pace. Covered teaching areas and a yurt with a wood-burning stove are available, so you’ll have shelter from the weather. Outdoor activities continue in all weathers except in cases of high winds, and waterproofs are recommended for all participants.
Most courses are aimed at adults, but children aged 12 and over may join, provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult.
Only one adult may accompany one child on a course. The adult is responsible for the safety and behaviour of the under-18 participant throughout the session. This ensures a safe and manageable learning environment for everyone.
The woodland camp includes covered composting toilets but no running water or mains sewage. Hot drinks are available throughout the course, with the kettle kept on for tea and coffee.
Overnight participants should bring their own tent, roll mat, and sleeping bag. Breakfast and dinner are provided, while packed lunches need to be brought for both days. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with prior notice.
Pets and alcohol are not allowed on courses. The woodland setting includes livestock nearby, and there is regular use of knives, axes, and other tools, which makes bringing animals unsafe. Some participants also prefer a dog-free environment, which is taken into account.
Courses aim to maintain a safe, focused environment for all attendees, so alcohol and pets are not permitted. This ensures everyone can concentrate on learning and enjoying the bushcraft activities.
The woodland is carefully managed to protect its natural environment. Conservation and sustainable woodland management are integral to all courses, and participants are encouraged to learn about natural history and responsible practices as part of the experience.
Course sizes are kept small, usually a maximum of 8 people, to minimise environmental impact and ensure a more personalised learning experience. Every activity is designed to respect the woodland while providing meaningful bushcraft education.
The course begins with introductions, safety guidance, and an orientation at the woodland camp, followed by hands-on sessions in tool use, firelighting, and shelter construction. The first day focuses on foundational skills, ensuring all participants build confidence and competence before moving on to more advanced techniques.
On the second day, attention shifts to water collection and purification, tarp and hammock setup, and woodland navigation. Participants also take a guided walk to identify trees and plants and practice skills such as carving and fire creation. Every activity is designed to be repeatable and transferable to other outdoor pursuits.
After you’ve made your booking, the centre will send a comprehensive joining pack 6 to 8 weeks before the session. This pack contains essential information about the meeting point, what to bring, clothing and equipment recommendations, and any other instructions needed to fully participate in the course.
It is important to bring this joining pack with you on the day, as it includes guidance that ensures you are properly prepared, helping the session run smoothly and safely from start to finish.
