Tajikistan is more than ninety percent mountains and one of the last great frontiers of high-altitude adventure. This is the land of the Pamir — the 'Roof of the World' — of turquoise-lake ranges reached on foot, and of 7,000 m giants climbed on serious, self-sufficient expeditions. Infrastructure is thin and the rewards are correspondingly huge: empty valleys, yak herders and Pamiri stone houses, and a Silk Road hospitality where a stranger at the door is treated as a gift. It is among the most remote and rewarding trekking countries on the planet.
The Pamir and Gorno-Badakhshan
The Pamir is why most people come. The Pamir Highway is one of the world's great overland journeys, the Wakhan Valley runs beneath the Hindu Kush with Afghanistan across the river, and mountaineering here means Ismoil Somoni (7,495 m, the former Communism Peak) and Korzhenevskaya in Gorno-Badakhshan. It is remote, permit-controlled and unforgettable.
The Fann Mountains and the north
For high-mountain trekking without extreme altitude, Sughd's Fann Mountains are the jewel: Iskanderkul, the Haft Kul (Seven Lakes) and the Kulikalon basin string together turquoise lakes, non-technical peaks and shepherd camps within reach of Dushanbe and Khujand — Central Asia's finest lake trekking, with no permit needed.
The capital and central valleys
Around the relaxed capital of Dushanbe, the green Varzob and Romit gorges give easy day hikes and the Hisor fortress adds history, while the Rasht valley climbs toward the western Pamirs and the warm lowlands of Khatlon hold tugai-forest wildlife.

The Pamir for the highway, the Wakhan and the big peaks; Sughd's Fann Mountains for turquoise-lake trekking; and Dushanbe and central Tajikistan for shorter trips and as the hub for everything else.
Booking and getting started on adventuro
Pamir trips require a GBAO permit, real acclimatisation and self-sufficient logistics, and are best arranged through experienced operators; the Fanns are more forgiving and need no permit.
