The autonomous Pamir province of Gorno-Badakhshan is a high-altitude world of plateau, deep valleys and border ranges where Tajikistan meets Afghanistan, China and Kyrgyzstan. It is the setting for the Pamir Highway and the country's greatest peaks — a place of yak herders, Pamiri stone houses and a hospitality that has sustained travellers on this road for centuries.
Highway, valleys and peaks
Pamir Highway journeys past mirror lakes and 4,000 m passes, Wakhan Valley trekking with Hindu Kush views, the wild Bartang and Zorkul routes, and high-altitude mountaineering on Ismoil Somoni and Korzhenevskaya, in the Pamir. A GBAO permit is required; open the Book here tab for dates.
