Malta packs an extraordinary amount into a small, sun-soaked archipelago — rugged limestone coast, some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean, and back-country tracks made for exploring by engine. It is warm, easy-going and endlessly bookable, whether you want to be on the water, under it, or throwing up dust off-road.
Off-road adventure
The catalogue leans towards adventure by engine: buggy, quad and 4x4 off-road tours bounce across the three islands, taking in cliffs, bays and film-set scenery well off the tourist track.
On and in the water
The coast is a playground too: powerboating, jet skiing, snorkelling and wild swimming in famously clear blue water, exploring sea caves and hidden coves along the way.
On foot
For a slower pace, coastal hiking traces the clifftops and countryside, with big Mediterranean views and quiet corners the buggies never reach.
Where to go
Gozo is the quieter, greener island and a favourite for adventure; Mellieħa and St Paul's Bay put the north coast and its water within reach; and Sliema and St Julian's and Valletta are lively, handy bases.
