You can cross Jordan in a long day's drive if you don't stop. Most people do stop: Petra and Wadi Rum in the south, Aqaba on the Red Sea, the Dead Sea and Mujib on the rift, Dana in the highlands, Amman as the airport and city launch. Heat, Ramadan timing and park permit rules matter as much as distance. Wadi Rum and Petra share the same governorate, so they pair naturally. Dana and Aqaba ask for extra nights if you want more than a photo stop.
This is the headline block. Petra, Wadi Rum & Aqaba covers Ma'an (Petra canyon walking and scrambling plus Wadi Rum hiking, climbing and desert camps) and Aqaba for Red Sea scuba diving and snorkelling. Rum is cold at night even after 40°C days. Aqaba is the swim-and-reef recovery. Book Petra tickets and Rum camps ahead in peak spring and autumn.
Dead Sea & King's Highway is the rift and the highland road: Balqa for the northern Dead Sea shore, Madaba for Wadi Mujib canyoning, Karak for canyon walks toward Dana. Dana & Tafilah Highlands is the quieter hiking if you want days that aren't Petra crowds. Dana Biosphere descents to Feynan leave from Tafilah. Mujib water levels close or open the Siq. Operators cancel when the gorge is unsafe.
Amman & the North is the arrival: Amman for flights and city days, Jerash for the Roman site, Ajloun for forest-reserve trails, Irbid for the far north toward Umm Qais. This is the greenest hiking in the country after winter rain. It's a contrast to Rum, not a substitute for it.
Amman for a first night and north-day trips. Wadi Musa or a Rum camp for the desert-and-Petra core. Aqaba if diving is the point. Feynan or Dana village if the biosphere hike is the point. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the hiking seasons. Summer is hot enough that inland hiking in July is a bad idea, and better on the reef.
Reef tasters, Petra guided walks and Ajloun forest days are often beginner-friendly. Mujib Siq, Rum climbing and Dana's full Feynan descent sit at improver and advanced. Open the Book here tab for live dates. Park opening, water levels and dive-boat spaces change faster than a static guidebook.
