Bosnia and Herzegovina is a mountain-and-river country first. Sarajevo and Mostar are the usual gateways. The Dinaric Alps hold 1984 Olympic ski hills within an hour of the capital, limestone massifs above the Neretva, and Maglić on the Montenegro border. The Una and Tara are the rafting headlines. Distances are short on paper. Canyon roads and winter snow still eat time, so most people pick one mountain block and one river rather than trying to see every park in a week.
Sarajevo and the Olympic mountains
Sarajevo & Olympic Mountains is the easiest place to start. From Sarajevo you can hike Trebević, Bjelašnica and Igman as day trips, then ski or walk Jahorina from Jahorina & East Sarajevo. Winter is the ski season. Summer is marked ridge walking with hut food and city evenings. Vlašić and Kupres sit further west. They're useful if you already have a car, not the first overnight from Baščaršija.
Herzegovina, Neretva and Prenj
South and hotter, Herzegovina & Neretva centres on Mostar for Neretva rafting (often from Konjic) and limestone climbing. Blagaj & Prenj is the bigger-mountain day: Prenj and Čvrsnica ridges, Buna spring, via ferrata where operators run it. This is the block for canyon water in summer and committing karst hikes if you have a head for exposure.
Una, Sutjeska and the Tara
Una & Northwest is river country from Bihać, with Una National Park kayaking and rafting past Štrbački Buk. The east is wilder: Sutjeska, Tara & the East for Maglić and Perućica hiking in Sutjeska, and Tara canyon rafting from Foča. Sutjeska is a three to four hour drive from Sarajevo. That's a full day in the park, not a casual add-on after breakfast.
Where to base yourself
Stay in Sarajevo for Olympic hills and a Sutjeska or Tara overnight. Stay in Mostar for Neretva and Prenj. Stay in Bihać if the Una is the point of the trip. Summer (June to September) is hiking and rafting. December to March is Jahorina and Bjelašnica skiing.
Booking and getting started on adventuro
Most river days and Olympic-mountain walks are beginner-friendly with kit from the operator. Maglić, Prenj traverses and high-water Tara sit at improver and advanced. Open the Book here tab for live dates, prices and whether you meet in town or at a canyon put-in.
