Marine Ecology is the SSI specialty for anyone who loves the ocean but does not need a cylinder on their back to make sense of it. You learn how marine organisms interact, how energy flows through ocean communities and why human activity matters on coasts you may never dive.
Six MySSI academic sessions cover ecology without mandatory in-water training for certification. Snorkellers aged six and up can enrol. Optional in-water field activities may be offered for certified divers or snorkellers aged ten and older when a centre wants to connect classroom topics to a local reef or rocky shore.
Divers often pair this with reef holidays. Non-divers take it before a family snorkel trip so the kids know why touching coral is a bad idea. PADI's parallel is Coral Reef Conservation, though SSI Marine Ecology casts a wider net than reefs alone. Most centres run it as a half-day or evening workshop completable entirely online.
