BSAC Advanced Ocean Diver is the optional bridge between Ocean Diver and Sports Diver. You extend your maximum depth to 30 metres on no-decompression profiles, sharpen navigation with a compass, and get comfortable deploying SMBs and DSMBs. UK boat skippers expect you to carry them on open-water days.
It is not mandatory. Plenty of divers go straight to Sports Diver. Advanced Ocean Diver suits anyone who wants 30 m access and nitrox practice without committing to the full rescue syllabus yet, or who is already partway through Sports Diver training and wants an interim 30 m qualification.
Centres can run Ocean Diver to Advanced Ocean Diver in as little as two days. Clubs pace it over several weekends. You complete two of the Sports Diver theory modules along the way, which shortens the Sports Diver route later if you continue. Practising DSMB deployment in training beats learning on a rough sea day when the boat is waiting. That is normal club wisdom.
Advanced Ocean Diver is performance-based with no separate high-stakes written exam. Instructors assess through dive planning, briefings and in-water observation.
