Zavkhan stretches between the Khangai foothills and the western deserts, with Uliastai as its main town. Few international tourists plan a holiday only here, but overland expeditions cross Zavkhan when linking Khovd, Ölgii and the Gobi-Altai without returning to Ulaanbaatar.
Uliastai sees little international tourism, so English may be limited outside your guide team. Carry extra water and snacks because shops are sparse between towns on cross-aimag routes.
Khangai foothills rise west of Uliastai with passes that stay snowbound into late spring. Spring melt can turn valley tracks into mud for a week, so May departures need flexible start dates.
Pass roads climb through larch forest where snow lingers in shaded gullies into June. Expedition cooks prepare meals in mess tents when wind makes cooking outside difficult.
Uliastai guesthouses are simple, with shared bathrooms and hearty breakfasts before early departures. Pack earplugs if you sleep lightly near the main road through town.
