Things to do in Sindh

Karachi stretches for kilometres along the Arabian Sea. Clifton Beach is where the city comes to stroll in the evening, with camel rides on the sand and food stalls along the promenade. Boats leave the harbour at Keamari for crabbing trips on the water after dark. East of the city, the Indus delta begins. Makli, a ridge of tombs near Thatta, is a UNESCO site of carved sandstone mausoleums built over four centuries. Keenjhar Lake, a large freshwater lake nearby, draws migratory birds in winter. Inland, the bare Kirthar hills hide Ranikot Fort, whose walls run for about 31 kilometres over the ridges.

What you can do

From about October to April, boats run from Mubarak village, west of Karachi, to Churna Island, a bare rock with clear water around it. You can snorkel or dive in shallow water over reef where groupers and parrotfish shelter in the rocks. Makli is best in the early morning, when the low light picks out the carvings. At Ranikot, you can walk sections of the walls from the Sann Gate and climb to the small Miri fort inside. For cooler air, a long drive via Dadu takes you up to Gorakh Hill, a plateau at about 1,700 metres on the Balochistan border. Most trips across Sindh start from Karachi.
