Selenge follows the Orkhon and Selenge river valleys north of the capital towards the Russian border. Amarbayasgalant, one of Mongolia's few surviving large monasteries, sits in a remote valley and rewards a long day drive from Ulaanbaatar or Darkhan. The aimag is more about culture and forest fringe than big dunes or lakes.
The drive to Amarbayasgalant rewards an early start from Ulaanbaatar or an overnight near Darkhan. The last track is rough, so tall vehicles handle it better. Photography is welcome outside prayer times, but flash inside halls is discouraged.
River valleys north of Darkhan carry freight trains towards Russia, while side roads climb into forest where larch turns yellow in early autumn. Monastery visitors often share the track with local pilgrims on festival weekends.
Guesthouses near Darkhan suit monastery travellers who want a shower before the rough track to Amarbayasgalant. Forest birds include woodpeckers and hoopoes along the river bluffs in summer.
