Ra covers the northeastern corner of Viti Levu, where the Kings Road bends around the top of the island. Rakiraki, also called Vaileka, is the small main town, with a market and a sugar mill. Behind it rise the Nakauvadra hills, which Fijian tradition holds as the home of Degei, the serpent god of creation. Offshore, Nananu-i-Ra and its smaller neighbours sit a few kilometres out from Ellington Wharf, and beyond them the deep channels of Bligh Water separate Viti Levu from Vanua Levu.
What to do in Ra
Bligh Water is why divers come. Day boats from the Rakiraki coast reach dozens of sites where pinnacles rise from deep water and the current feeds soft corals in shades of yellow and purple. That same current means some sites suit experienced divers, and guides pick the day's scuba dives by the tide. On Nananu-i-Ra, the trade wind blows steadily across the island for much of the drier season, which draws kitesurfers and windsurfers to its beaches. Ra sits at the quieter northern edge of Western Viti Levu, about two and a half to three hours' drive from Nadi.
