Otago stretches from the Remarkables above Queenstown to the Victorian warehouses of Dunedin and the dry schist hills of Central Otago. Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu with the gondola climbing Bob's Peak, and the Shotover and Kawarau gorges carry jetboats and bungy platforms within minutes of the waterfront cafes. Wanaka keeps a single main street on Lake Wanaka, with Roy's Peak and the Rob Roy Glacier track drawing walkers when access rules allow.
Central Otago's old rail beds now carry cyclists between Clyde, Alexandra and winery cellar doors where pinot vines run in rows on north-facing slopes. On the southeast coast, Dunedin's Otago Peninsula holds the only mainland royal albatross colony you can visit by road, with little blue penguins returning to beaches at dusk.
What to do in Otago
Winter shuttles run to Coronet Peak and Cardrona from Queenstown and Wanaka lodges. Summer brings lake kayaking, canyon swings and guided hikes on the peninsula. Plan longer loops through the wider Otago region before you head south to Fiordland.
