Southern Khatlon is Tajikistan's warm lowland province, spread between the Vakhsh river and the Afghan border, with the Tigrovaya Balka wetlands and the great Nurek reservoir among its draws. It is a region of tugai forest, water and history rather than high peaks — a gentler, hotter counterpoint to the mountains.
