Hawke's Bay is sun-baked plains wine country with a deco seaside city. Napier rebuilt in 1930s art deco after the earthquake, and its facades now frame cafe tables and a waterfront promenade. Hastings and Havelock North spread across the plains beneath Te Mata Peak, where a steep walk opens over vineyards and the coast.
Cape Kidnappers projects into the Pacific with a gannet colony at the tip, reachable along the beach at low tide or by tractor when tours run.
What to do in Hawke's Bay
Flat trails link cellar doors for half-day cycling between tastings, with e-bikes common in harvest season. Gannet tours time the tide so you are off the beach before the sea returns. Te Mata Peak walks reward a sunset if you still have legs after a ride, with the track lit on some summer evenings. Hawke's Bay pairs with Tongariro to the west and Wellington to the south on East Coast and Manawatū routes.
