What is ATM actually like?

A guided river cave: swim, scramble, helmet, darkness, then ceremonial remains you don't touch. It's physical and controlled. If that mix isn't for you, pick tubing or another cave.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be a competent, confident swimmer in moving water and dark space. If you're not, don't book ATM. Operators mean the requirement.

Caracol or ATM if I only have one inland day?

ATM if you want the cave. Caracol if you want jungle ruins and a long drive. They're different days. Don't do both.

When do ATM permits go?

Peak dry-season dates go first. Book the cave, then the bed. The other way round is how people miss it.

Things to do in Cayo

Cayo is San Ignacio, ATM, Caracol and the Macal: Belize's inland adventure district. You'll swim in caves, float rivers and drive jungle roads. English is official, which helps the briefings. Site rules at ATM are not optional. Guides will turn people around. That's their job.

Caves, tubing and jungle ruins
