Mallorca's warm, exceptionally clear Mediterranean water makes it one of the best snorkelling destinations in the western Med. The island's rocky coves (calas), seagrass meadows and protected marine reserves shelter an abundance of fish, octopus, rays and the occasional turtle, with summer water temperatures above 25°C and visibility that regularly exceeds 15 metres. Much of the best snorkelling is reached by boat — the island's excursion operators run trips to quiet bays and sea caves that are impossible to reach from the shore — though there's superb easy snorkelling from many beaches too.
Where to snorkel
The protected waters around the islets of El Toro and the Malgrats off the south-west coast, the Cabrera Archipelago National Park to the south, and the clear calas of the east coast all offer outstanding snorkelling. The Posidonia seagrass meadows that keep Mallorca's water so clear are themselves a rich habitat. Boat trips open up the cliffs and caves of the Serra de Tramuntana coast, while sheltered bays suit beginners and families.
