Lancashire is an under-rated climbing county with a strong tradition and easy access to far more besides. The West Pennine Moors and the quarries around Bolton and Chorley — Wilton, Anglezarke, Brownstones and others — offer characterful gritstone climbing close to the towns, while the county's position between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales puts superb mountain and limestone climbing within easy reach. It's a great base both to learn and to build towards bigger objectives.

The Lancashire quarries provide accessible single-pitch climbing across the grades — solid, grippy gritstone that's ideal for learning technique and for building towards leading. For those wanting more, the Forest of Bowland, the Dales' limestone and the Lakeland fells are all close by, so a Lancashire-based course can take you from a first session on local rock out to mountain crags as you progress.

The region's qualified instructors offer the full pathway — introductory taster sessions, structured beginner courses, navigation and scrambling, and coaching towards leading your own trad and multi-pitch routes. Indoor climbing courses are also available for year-round training and a gentle way in.
