Iceland offers two extraordinary kinds of caving found almost nowhere else: lava-tube caves formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, and the surreal blue ice caves that form inside the glaciers. Exploring a lava tube takes you into the island's volcanic underworld of frozen lava rivers and colourful mineral walls, while a glacier ice cave is a once-in-a-lifetime walk inside a glacier, surrounded by glowing blue ice. Both are guided experiences in a dramatic, fast-changing environment.
Lava tubes and ice caves
Lava-tube caves — hollow tunnels left by flowing lava — can be explored year-round, with helmets and head torches revealing rock formations and colours frozen in time. Glacier ice caves are a winter phenomenon (typically November–March), forming naturally within the glaciers and accessed on guided tours; no two seasons are the same, as the caves melt and re-form each year.
Guided tours
Iceland's guides run lava-tube caving and seasonal ice-cave tours for all levels, providing helmets, lights and any equipment needed, plus the expertise to keep a fast-changing environment safe.
