Wales has a strong tradition of gorge walking — the upstream version of canyoning, where groups scramble, wade and occasionally swim up a river gorge rather than descending it. The distinction matters less than it might sound: both involve cold water, exciting terrain and the experience of being inside a landscape that most people walk past without ever seeing properly. Several centres in North and South Wales offer both gorge walking and canyoning on the same day for groups who want the full river gorge experience.

Waterfall descents

Wales has a disproportionate number of accessible waterfalls for its size, many of them associated with old industrial water courses and quarrying landscapes that have reverted to nature. The waterfalls of the Brecon Beacons — the Four Falls walk south of Pontneddfechan is the most famous cluster — are among the most dramatic in the UK. Canyoning in this area involves abseiling the same waterfalls that tourists photograph from the footpath, an experience that shifts perspective considerably.

Gorge walking (sometimes called ghyll scrambling or river scrambling) involves scrambling, wading and swimming up a river gorge rather than descending it. It's a high-energy, high-fun activity that takes participants into parts of the landscape rarely visited on foot.

Many Welsh operators run family-friendly gorge walking days for children from around age 8 upwards, depending on the specific route and water levels. Check minimum age requirements with your centre when booking — some routes have height or swimming confidence requirements.

Wetsuits, helmets, buoyancy aids and harnesses are typically provided. Bring swimwear or close-fitting base layers, old trainers or neoprene boots and a change of dry clothes for after the session.

North Wales (particularly the Dee Valley, Conwy Valley and Snowdonia rivers) and the Brecon Beacons each offer distinctive canyoning terrain. North Wales tends toward steeper, more technical gorges; the Beacons offer famous waterfall routes in more accessible terrain.

Most operators run April to October. Water temperatures in spring and autumn require wetsuits; summer water is warmer. Some centres will run year-round for experienced groups in suitable conditions.
