The northwest Highlands — Gairloch, Torridon and the Kintail area — provide more remote and dramatic venues for those willing to combine an approach walk with the descent.
What canyoning in Scotland involves
A typical Scottish canyoning day involves a walk-in to the canyon, followed by three to six hours in the gorge — abseiling waterfalls, swimming through pools, traversing narrow rock channels and jumping where conditions allow. Wetsuits, helmets and harnesses are provided by operators; participants need to be comfortable in the water and willing to commit to the route. Most canyoning days are graded according to the technical and physical demands of the route: introductory days can be done by anyone with basic fitness and a willingness to get thoroughly wet.
