The South Island splits sharply between the wet West Coast and the drier Canterbury plains east of the Alps. Franz Josef and Fox townships sit almost at sea level yet face glaciers descending from the peaks. Christchurch rebuild has refreshed hotels and public spaces after the earthquakes, and serves as the main airport for many South Island itineraries.
West Coast rainfall is frequent, so glacier walks and heli-hikes sometimes cancel when cloud sits on the ice. Arthur's Pass links the coast to Christchurch through alpine scenery with short walks near the village.
Kaikōura's whale-watching boats depend on calm sea states, and seals bask on rocks visible from the coastal highway.
Camper vans need freedom camping research because council rules vary by town. Glacier valley walks can close when icefall risk rises, so check the visitor centre board each morning.
Ice, passes and plains
West Coast glacier experiences and rainforest walks pair with Canterbury hiking at Arthur's Pass and harbour paddling near Lyttelton. Kaikōura whale trips run from the north Canterbury coast when operators are sailing.
Getting there and where to stay
Drive State Highway 6 for the glacier towns, or cross from Wanaka via Haast Pass. Christchurch hotels suit fly-in travellers. One night at Franz Josef or Fox is standard for morning glacier trips.
Linking with Queenstown or Nelson
Many loops run Queenstown to Wanaka, over the pass to the West Coast, then north to Greymouth or east to Christchurch. Allow two driving days without treating the roads as a race. Haast Pass closes briefly after heavy snow, so check alerts if you link Wanaka with the glaciers in winter.
