Southland is the South Island's southern tail, where rainforest meets cold seas and small towns serve Fiordland expeditions. Te Anau and Manapouri are launch points for Milford and Doubtful Sound cruises, while Invercargill handles flights towards Stewart Island.
Milford Road from Te Anau is scenic but busy in summer, with avalanche control possible in winter. Stewart Island's Oban village has limited beds, so book ferries and accommodation together.
Sandflies are part of Fiordland walks, so pack repellent and long sleeves for riverside tracks. Fuel stops thin out south of Invercargill, and petrol stations close early in small towns.
Chatham Islands sit far east in the Pacific, with flights only a few days each week and a culture distinct from mainland New Zealand.
Sounds, kiwi and remote flights
Southland and Fiordland hosts Milford and Doubtful Sound boat days, lake crossings from Manapouri, and forest walks near Te Anau. Stewart Island trips leave from Bluff for overnight kiwi spotting. Chatham Islands trips focus on bird colonies and Moriori heritage when flights align.
Getting there and where to stay
Base in Te Anau for sound cruises, or Queenstown with a long early drive if you accept the mileage. Oban on Stewart Island suits two nights. Chatham travel needs flexible dates around flight schedules.
Weather buffers
Fiordland rainfall is heavy, and Milford flights from Queenstown cancel in low cloud. Keep a spare day in Te Anau before flying home from Queenstown or Christchurch. Doubtful Sound trips take longer than Milford days, so pack lunch and motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive on boats.
