The Greater Caucasus is Georgia's high northern wall — a 300-kilometre chain of glaciated 5,000 m peaks, medieval watchtower villages and roadless valleys strung along the Russian border. This is the country's adventure heartland, where a single region holds North Africa-beating summits, one of Europe's finest treks and a genuine winter freeride scene, all wrapped in the fierce, hospitable mountain culture of the Svans and Khevsurs.
Trekking and climbing
The classic is the four-day Mestia-to-Ushguli trek through Upper Svaneti, but the range runs from gentle valley walks to serious mountaineering on Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) above Mtskheta-Mtianeti and the glaciated spires of Ushba, Tetnuldi and Shkhara in Svaneti. Quieter Racha adds forested lakes and mineral springs.
Winter in the high mountains
From December the same slopes become a skiing and freeride playground — lift-served powder and open bowls at Gudauri, and backcountry touring straight from the tower villages of Mestia.
