Amman is the airport and the first night. The north is the green surprise after Rum: oak woodland, Roman stone, and trails that exist because it actually rains here in winter. You'll use Amman as the launch, Jerash for the site, Ajloun for forest walking, and Irbid if you're going as far as Umm Qais.
Forest trails and northern days
Ajloun Forest Reserve is the reliable hiking after winter rain. Jerash is walking among ruins, not a desert canyon. The north is a contrast to Wadi Rum, not a substitute for it. Summer inland is hot enough that forest shade matters. Ramadan timing changes opening hours and how you eat on the trail. Check it when you book.
How this region fits a trip
One night in Amman plus a north day is the usual first-timer pattern, then south to Petra and Rum. Don't spend the week here if desert and reef are why you came. Do spend a day here if you've had four days of sandstone and want trees.
