The Gobi is not a single sand sea. It mixes gravel plains, saxaul scrub, flaming-red cliffs and, in Ömnögovi, the long crest of Khongoryn Els. Most itineraries run from Ulaanbaatar south through Dundgovi and Dornogovi, or fly to Dalanzadgad for shorter access to the dunes. Days are hot and dry in summer, vehicles kick up dust, and the reward is silence, Milky Way skies and camel rides at camp.
Seat comfort matters on Gobi drives. If you have a bad back, ask for a seat in the front and bring a buff for dust. Camps often run on generator hours in the evening, so charge phones and head torches when power is on. Toilet stops are open steppe with shovel etiquette, which your guide will explain on day one.
At Khongoryn Els the dune crest catches sunset light while camels kneel in a line at the base. Bayanzag cliffs glow red in late afternoon, and Yolyn Am canyon can hold ice into summer, which surprises many first-time visitors.
Dunes, cliffs and canyons
Camel trekking at Khongoryn Els in Ömnögovi, walks at Bayanzag in Bayankhongor, and canyon stops at Yolyn Am on routes through Dundgovi and Dornogovi. Short hikes at the canyon and cliff sites break up long driving days.
Flights versus road
The flight to Dalanzadgad saves two long driving days if you are short on time, but seats sell out around Naadam and the August holiday period. Road loops from Ulaanbaatar let you stop at Dundgovi and Bayanzag on the way south, which photographers often prefer.
Getting there and where to stay
Tourist ger camps cluster near Dalanzadgad, Khongoryn Els and Yolyn Am, with shared washing blocks and set meal times. Mandalgovi and Sainshand work well as overnight stops when you drive both ways from the capital.
Timing a Gobi loop
Four nights is a minimum for dunes, cliffs and a canyon without daily ten-hour drives. June to September is the usual camp season.
