Dornogovi covers the eastern flank of the Gobi as paved and graded roads run south from Choir towards Sainshand and the Chinese border. Landscape is gravel, scrub and occasional escarpments rather than tall dunes. Many overland tours cross Dornogovi when linking UB with Ömnögovi without flying.
Sainshand has rail connections for travellers mixing train and jeep routes. The landscape is flat and open, which makes for long horizons but few shade stops until you reach the next ger camp.
Semi-desert here means saxaul bushes and curious gazelles at dawn. Rail travellers sometimes join jeep groups at Sainshand to continue south without returning to the capital.
Long straight roads here test fuel planning, and drivers carry spare canisters for legs between towns. Herders sell dairy products at occasional roadside stops when you travel with a local guide.
Roadside gers sometimes sell airag in season, which tastes sharp if you are new to fermented mare's milk. Ask your guide before you try a full bowl.
