An electric bike is one of the easiest ways to cover more of the Los Angeles coastline in a single ride. Starting close to the beach in Santa Monica, pedal-assist eBikes let you move smoothly between coastal neighbourhoods while keeping the ride relaxed and controlled.
This self-guided option suits confident riders who want flexibility, extra range and the ability to link longer sections of the beachfront path without feeling rushed.
After check-in, you’ll be set up on the correct eBike size and shown how to use the pedal-assist system safely. Assistance engages as you pedal, helping you maintain speed with less effort while still feeling like a conventional bike. Brakes, saddle height and controls are checked before you head out.
From the start point, you can roll directly onto the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, following the coast past Santa Monica Pier and along the beachfront towards Venice Beach. The added assistance makes it easier to manage busy sections, headwinds and longer stretches without fatigue, especially during warmer parts of the day.
With a 4-hour or full-day hire, many riders continue into Marina del Rey, stopping at landmarks such as Muscle Beach, the Venice Art Walls and the Venice Canals. The route is flat and well-marked, allowing you to decide how far to go and when to turn back without worrying about conserving energy.
Santa Monica sits at the northern end of the coastal cycle network, making it an efficient starting point for longer rides. The beachfront location provides immediate access to the bike path, avoiding city traffic and complex navigation.
From here, you can travel south along a continuous paved route linking beaches, residential areas and marina paths. This setup makes cycling one of the most practical ways to explore this part of Los Angeles, particularly if you want to see multiple neighbourhoods in one outing.
All riders must be able to ride a bicycle independently and confidently. The minimum age for eBike riders is 13 years old, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over.
One government-issued photo ID is required and will be held as a deposit for the duration of the rental, with a credit card kept on file for bike security. For safety reasons, trailers and tag-a-longs cannot be attached to eBikes.
eBikes are well suited to the Santa Monica and Venice coastline, where distances add up quickly and conditions can change throughout the day. Pedal assist allows you to ride further, keep a steady pace and enjoy longer sections of the route without turning the day into a physical challenge.
With quality electric bikes, essential equipment included and immediate access to the beachfront path, this hire is designed for riders who want freedom and range. You control the route, stops and pace, making it easy to tailor the ride to your time, energy and interests.
A pedal-assist eBike provides electric support only when you pedal, reducing effort while keeping the riding experience natural. You remain in control of speed, braking and balance at all times.
This makes longer rides more manageable without removing the feel of cycling or requiring special handling skills.
Yes, provided you’re confident on a standard bike. The handling is similar, with the main difference being the additional power when pedalling.
You’ll have time to familiarise yourself with the controls before setting off, and assistance levels can be adjusted to suit your comfort.
The coastal path links several neighbourhoods, and distances can add up quickly. An eBike helps you cover more ground without fatigue, especially if you plan to ride for several hours.
It’s also useful for maintaining a steady pace through busier sections of the path.
Pedal-assist eBikes are permitted on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail and most paved coastal paths. Riders are expected to follow local rules and ride considerately on shared-use sections.
Speed should always be adjusted to match conditions, particularly near popular landmarks.
The minimum age for eBike riders is 13. Riders must be tall enough to fit the bike correctly and confident handling the assistance.
Trailers, child seats and tag-a-longs are not permitted on eBikes, so families with younger children should consider standard bikes instead.
Range depends on assistance level and stops, but the flat terrain allows efficient battery use. Many riders comfortably reach Venice Beach and Marina del Rey within a half-day hire.
A full-day hire gives flexibility to take breaks and still cover longer sections of the coast.
2 hours suits a focused ride between Santa Monica and Venice. 4 hours allows you to extend into Marina del Rey with time for stops.
A full day is best if you want to spread the ride out, avoid peak times and explore without watching the clock.
Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Even with assistance, you’ll still be pedalling, so breathable layers work best.
Bring water and sun protection, particularly during warmer months.
You’ll need one government-issued photo ID, which is held as a deposit, and a credit card kept on file for bike security.
Having these ready helps ensure a smooth and quick check-in.
For coastal exploration, cycling is often faster and more practical than driving. You avoid parking, stay close to the beach and can stop wherever you like.
An eBike makes it easier to link multiple areas in one ride while keeping the experience relaxed and flexible.
