Hidden beyond the city limits, Nordmarka offers a chance to experience the wilder side of Oslo. This challenging private hiking adventure takes you through vast forests, past traditional cabins and up to Skjennungstoppen, where sweeping views reward your efforts.
Beginning with a scenic train journey from central Oslo, you'll travel into the heart of Nordmarka before setting off on foot through one of Norway's most popular outdoor recreation areas. Dense woodland, peaceful trails and open clearings create a sense of adventure from the very start.
Following forest paths towards Skjennungstoppen, you'll tackle varied terrain while keeping an eye out for wildlife that inhabits the area. Moose, deer, foxes, beavers, eagles and hares all call these forests home, although sightings can never be guaranteed. Along the route, you'll also visit the geographical centre of Oslo, hidden deep within the woodland.
Reaching the summit provides impressive views across the surrounding landscape before the hike continues via two traditional Norwegian cabins. Here you can purchase fresh waffles, pastries and hot drinks before making your way to Sognsvann Lake, where the adventure concludes with a metro journey back to the city.
Bordering the northern edge of Oslo, Nordmarka is a vast forest region filled with lakes, hills, trails and traditional cabins. For generations, locals have visited the area to hike, ski, cycle and spend time outdoors, making it one of the most important recreational areas in the country.
Contained within this enormous wilderness are countless routes that feel far removed from urban life despite their proximity to the capital. The Skjennungstoppen area offers a particularly rewarding combination of wildlife habitats, forest scenery and elevated viewpoints.
Designed for active participants, this is one of the more demanding hiking tours available and covers approximately 12 kilometres across varied terrain.
Backpack, water, suitable hiking footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are essential. Bringing snacks is also recommended for the duration of the hike.
Sharing a genuine passion for Norway's outdoors, the guides introduce guests to areas that many visitors never discover independently. Their knowledge of wildlife, local traditions and forest routes adds another dimension to the experience beyond simply following a trail.
Operating as a private tour allows the day to remain flexible while maintaining a pace that suits your group. Whether searching for wildlife, enjoying the scenery or learning about life in Nordmarka, the experience feels personal throughout.
Among the hiking tours offered around Oslo, this is considered one of the more physically demanding options. The route covers approximately 12 kilometres and includes uneven forest trails, natural terrain and sustained periods of walking.
Participants do not need advanced hiking experience, but a good level of fitness and confidence walking on varied ground will help you enjoy the day much more comfortably.
Nordmarka supports an impressive variety of wildlife including moose, deer, foxes, hares, beavers and numerous bird species such as hawks and eagles.
Although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, the area provides some of the best opportunities around Oslo to encounter animals in their natural habitat. Your guide will also help identify tracks, habitats and signs of wildlife activity along the route.
Many visitors ask specifically about moose, as they are one of Norway's most iconic animals. While they do live in Nordmarka, they are naturally cautious and often remain hidden within the forest.
Occasional sightings do happen, particularly during quieter periods, but the tour should be viewed as a wildlife opportunity rather than a wildlife guarantee.
Skjennungstoppen is one of the most popular viewpoints within Nordmarka and serves as the main destination of this hike.
After the climb, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views across the surrounding forests and landscapes, providing a real sense of how extensive Oslo's wilderness areas are.
The stops themselves are included as part of the route, allowing guests to experience a traditional Norwegian forest cabin atmosphere.
Food and drinks purchased at the cabins are not included, giving you the freedom to choose from pastries, waffles, coffee, hot chocolate and other refreshments available on the day.
Forest cabins, known locally as "hytter", are deeply connected to Norwegian outdoor culture. Many Norwegians plan hikes and ski trips around visiting these cabins for food, drinks and socialising.
Experiencing a cabin stop offers visitors a genuine insight into everyday life and traditions that have been enjoyed for generations.
A comfortable backpack, water, hiking footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are essential. Conditions can change throughout the day, especially in forest environments.
Many guests also bring snacks, spare layers, sun protection and insect repellent depending on the season and weather forecast.
Yes, all transport required during the experience is included, including both the train journey into Nordmarka and the metro journey back into Oslo.
This makes it easy to access remote sections of the forest without needing to organise transport independently.
