Mastering a helicopter hover is one of the most rewarding parts of learning to fly, and this introductory lesson gives you the chance to experience it for yourself. Guided by a qualified instructor throughout, you'll take the controls of a Robinson R44 while two friends or family members can enjoy the flight from the rear seats.
Before heading to the helicopter, you'll meet your instructor at Sherburn-in-Elmet for a comprehensive briefing covering the aircraft, flight controls and the principles of helicopter flying. You'll learn how each control affects the helicopter and discover why hovering is considered one of the most challenging and rewarding flying skills.
During the lesson, your instructor will demonstrate the controls before inviting you to take over under close supervision. As your confidence builds, you'll experience the unique challenge of maintaining a hover, making small, precise control inputs while your instructor provides guidance throughout. The lesson is designed for complete beginners, so no previous flying experience is needed.
Unlike many introductory flying experiences, this lesson allows two additional passengers to join you in the rear seats of the Robinson R44 at no extra cost. If you later decide to continue with helicopter training, the time spent flying during this lesson can count towards your future pilot qualification.
Conveniently based in Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire, the training airfield offers an ideal environment for learning to fly helicopters. Its quieter airspace means less waiting on the ground and more opportunity to focus on developing your flying skills.
Dedicated helicopter pads are located immediately outside the briefing facilities, allowing you to move straight from your ground lesson into the aircraft. Friends and family are welcome to watch helicopters arriving and departing from the designated viewing area, subject to availability.
Good general health is recommended before taking part. Anyone with epilepsy, vertigo or another condition that could affect flying should speak with the team before booking.
Children are welcome, although anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Participation is always at the operator's discretion, and any accessibility requirements should be discussed before your visit.
Having trained helicopter pilots since 1989, the team brings decades of experience to every lesson. Their instructors have logged more than 40,000 hours of helicopter instruction, helping beginners develop confidence in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Training is carried out in the Robinson R44, one of the world's most widely used helicopter training aircraft. As a UK CAA-licensed training provider, the team follows professional standards while making every lesson enjoyable, informative and memorable.
Hovering is one of the most recognisable helicopter flying skills and involves keeping the aircraft steady over one position rather than continuing to fly forwards. It requires smooth, coordinated control movements and is something every helicopter pilot learns during their training.
During your lesson, your instructor will introduce you to the basics of hovering while remaining in full control of the aircraft at all times. It's an enjoyable way to appreciate the precision involved in helicopter flying.
Yes. After demonstrating the controls, your instructor will invite you to take control of the helicopter while providing guidance throughout the lesson.
Although you'll experience flying the aircraft yourself, the instructor always remains responsible for the helicopter and can immediately take control whenever required.
Yes. Two passengers can accompany you during the lesson at no additional cost, travelling in the rear seats of the Robinson R44.
This allows family or friends to experience the flight alongside you while watching your introduction to helicopter flying from inside the aircraft.
Both lessons include the same professional instruction, opportunity to take the controls and hover challenge experience.
Choosing the 30-minute option gives you additional time in the air, allowing more opportunity to practise the basics of helicopter handling with your instructor's guidance.
Absolutely. No previous flying experience is required, and every lesson is designed specifically for people trying helicopter flying for the first time.
The experience begins with a detailed briefing before gradually introducing you to the controls, allowing you to build confidence at a comfortable pace.
Lessons are conducted using the Robinson R44, a helicopter widely used for professional pilot training around the world.
Its responsive handling and excellent visibility make it an ideal aircraft for introductory lessons and for anyone considering future helicopter training.
