Building confidence at the controls takes time, and this half-day helicopter experience gives you exactly that. With two separate flying lessons, dedicated instruction and your very first pilot's logbook to take home, it's an excellent introduction for anyone interested in helicopter flying or considering future pilot training.
Following your arrival at Sherburn-in-Elmet, you'll meet your instructor for a detailed pre-flight briefing covering the Robinson R44 helicopter, the lesson plan and the flying exercises you'll complete during the day. Once you're familiar with the aircraft and safety procedures, it's time for the first of two 30-minute helicopter lessons.
Throughout the first flight, your instructor will introduce the controls before allowing you to take over under close supervision. You'll begin developing an understanding of how the helicopter responds while experiencing the unique feeling of flying the aircraft yourself. After landing, you'll enjoy a relaxed break of around 45 minutes, giving you time to ask questions, discuss your progress with your instructor and enjoy a coffee before heading back into the air.
The second lesson builds on everything you've already learned, giving you additional time at the controls while introducing more advanced beginner exercises, including the challenge of hovering. By the end of the experience you'll receive your first pilot's logbook to record your training, and if you choose to continue learning in the future, the flight time completed during both lessons can count towards your helicopter pilot qualification.
Positioned in Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire, the training airfield provides an excellent environment for helicopter instruction thanks to its quieter surroundings away from major commercial airports. This allows lessons to focus on flying rather than unnecessary waiting on the ground.
Purpose-built helicopter facilities and dedicated training areas create an ideal setting for aspiring pilots. Friends and family are welcome to watch helicopters arriving and departing from the designated viewing area beside the helipad, subject to operational activity.
Participants should be in reasonable health before taking part. Anyone with epilepsy, vertigo or another medical condition that could affect flying should discuss this with the team before booking.
No previous flying experience is required, making this package suitable for complete beginners. Anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult, and participation remains at the operator's discretion.
Specialising in helicopter training since 1989, the team has introduced countless students to flying while accumulating more than 40,000 hours of helicopter instruction. Their experienced instructors are skilled at helping beginners develop confidence in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Every lesson takes place in the Robinson R44, one of the world's most widely used helicopter training aircraft. As a UK CAA-licensed training provider, they offer professional instruction that can provide the first steps towards gaining a helicopter pilot licence.
Splitting the experience into two flights allows you to build confidence during your first lesson before developing your skills further during the second.
The break between flights also gives you time to discuss your progress with your instructor, ask questions and better understand what you've learned before returning to the helicopter.
Yes. Both lessons include the opportunity to take control of the Robinson R44 under the guidance of your qualified instructor.
The instructor remains fully responsible for the helicopter throughout, ensuring you can concentrate on learning while enjoying a safe and supportive environment.
Absolutely. The package has been designed for complete beginners as well as anyone considering helicopter training in the future.
Everything starts with a detailed briefing before gradually introducing the controls and basic flying techniques during your lessons.
Your pilot's logbook is used to record the flying time completed during your lessons and becomes your personal training record.
If you decide to continue learning to fly, this same logbook can be used throughout your future helicopter training as you build additional flying hours.
Yes. Should you continue your helicopter training after the experience, the flying time completed during these lessons can count towards your qualification.
Many future helicopter pilots begin with an introductory package like this before progressing onto structured training courses.
The second flight expands on the knowledge gained during your first lesson, allowing you to become more familiar with the helicopter's controls.
Depending on your progress and the conditions on the day, you'll also be introduced to the challenge of hovering while continuing to build confidence at the controls.
Although the total flying time is one hour, the complete package lasts around half a day because it includes two lessons, a pre-flight briefing and a debrief with a coffee break.
Allowing plenty of time ensures you can enjoy the experience without rushing between each stage of the training.
Training is carried out in the Robinson R44, a helicopter used extensively for professional pilot instruction across the world.
Its handling characteristics make it ideal for introducing new pilots to helicopter flying while providing an authentic training experience.
