Families split this outing into two halves: adults drive a short forest safari while children travel in sleds, then the younger ones get their own small snowmobiles on a supervised track. The house in between is for a warm drink and a pause so nobody stays out in the cold too long, which is the point of a mixed-age day rather than a long adult trail.
Adults get the forest loop after kit and a short briefing, riding for about an hour while children travel in sleds. The pace stays family-friendly, with a photo stop if the group is settled, and the guide watches the sleds as much as the machines. Everyone then turns back toward the wooden safari house for a proper thaw rather than staying out for a second adult loop.
On the track, guides match each child to a smaller machine by age, height and build, because size and how they stand on the day matter more than a number on a form. The session is supervised and separate from the adult trail, and adults watch from the side. Afterward you return kit and are taken back to the hotel, with the house drink and marshmallows sitting between the two halves.
The adult loop stays near the safari house so sleds and small children are not on a long expedition. Forest and open snow still appear within that hour, but the route is chosen for mixed ages rather than for distance.
The children's track sits at the house, which keeps the second half contained and easy to step back from if someone gets cold. That layout is why the outing works for families: the forest piece and the track piece share one yard, and the pause between them is indoors enough to matter.
Adults need no previous snowmobile experience, because the briefing covers the machines before the forest loop. Children on the track are matched to a machine they can actually handle, and the guide will be honest about who is ready that day.
Share ages and heights beforehand so the team can plan sleds and track bikes rather than guessing in the yard. Wear warm layers under the provided outer kit, and have hats already on the children at pickup, because fitting several sizes takes a few extra minutes and small guests feel the cold quickly on a moving sled.
Mixed-age outings have been a focus since 2005, built for families rather than asking children to sit a long adult trail. The house break is part of the plan, not an afterthought, with a warm drink and time to thaw before the track opens.
Track machines are chosen on the spot by the guide, not by a guess on a form. That keeps the second half safer and more fun for the children who are ready, and it leaves an honest option for those who are happier watching from the side.
Pickup is offered from the hotels and meeting points listed for this safari, including Santa Claus Village, selected Ounasvaara hotels, SantaSport, Postmaster Hotel, and the town office at Pirkkakatu 2. The team confirms your collection point and time so the whole family is waiting in the same place.
Have children's ages and heights ready, because outer kit is fitted at the house before either the adult loop or the kids' track starts. Hats and layers already on the children make the fitting faster and the first minutes outside much kinder.
On the first loop they travel in sleds while adults drive. After a house break they get smaller snowmobiles on a supervised track, matched to height and build.
The guide decides the machine on the day. Age helps, but size and how they stand on the day matter more than a number on a form.
Plan for about 3.5 hours from pickup to drop-off. Around 2.5 hours are the activity, including the adult hour, the house pause and the kids' track.
Your confirmation shows the live start. The house break is meant to keep small guests warm, so it is not wasted time.
No. The briefing covers the adult machines before the forest loop. The hour is paced for mixed families, not for long-distance drivers.
If one adult would rather not drive, they can share or sit with a child in a sled. Say so at the yard so the guide can arrange the sleds.
Thermal overalls, boots, wool socks, mittens and helmets are provided for the driving parts. Children get kit that fits as well as the store allows.
Bring your own warm layers and hats. The house break is easier if everyone can peel a layer without getting damp.
Listed hotels and meeting points in Rovaniemi, or the office on Pirkkakatu 2. The team confirms pickup point and time.
Be ready as a group, with hats and layers already on the children. Fitting several sizes takes a few extra minutes at the house.
A warm drink and marshmallows at the house are part of the pause between the adult loop and the kids' track. It is a thaw and a treat, not a full lunch.
Eat before pickup if the family needs a proper meal. Tell the team about allergies beforehand so they can plan the house drink.
The adult loop may be shortened if wind or snowfall is hard on children in sleds. The track at the house is more sheltered and can still run when the forest feels too sharp.
If the outing cannot run safely, the team will contact you to reschedule. Keep a stay number to hand that morning.
They can often sit in a sled with a parent on the adult loop. The track machines are matched later and may not suit the smallest guests.
Share ages and heights beforehand. The guide will be honest about who can use a children's machine that day.
Two adults can share, and a single-driving extra may be offered. Children are in sleds on the forest loop, not as adult-machine drivers.
Ask before the date if one adult wants their own machine. Group size affects whether that extra is available.
Every child's age and height, a phone number you will use during the stay, and any allergy notes for the house drink. That is the useful list.
If a child is nervous about noise or speed, mention it so they can start on the gentlest track machine.
Over het centrum
Rovaniemi
We have been sharing winter days around Rovaniemi since 2005, first with local teams and friends and now with travellers who want a real feel of life above the Arctic Circle. The work is still rooted in the same thing: small groups, Lappish hospitality, and time outdoors in the last wilderness of Europe.
Guides here grew up with this landscape. Days are built around snowmobile trails, campfire meals from local kitchens, and the quiet of the forest after the city lights fade. We take you into everyday Arctic life, not a staged version of it, and we look after the places we visit so the next generation can enjoy the same snow, silence, and night sky.
