Be part of one of the UK’s longest-running sailing events with a regatta experience that combines competitive racing and a lively shoreside atmosphere. This is a great opportunity to build racing skills, sail in a well-known event, and enjoy time with your crew both on and off the water. With multiple race days and optional delivery legs, it offers a full and varied sailing experience.
The regatta centres around several days of competitive racing in and around Dartmouth, with courses set across the River Dart and Start Bay. Each day typically includes two races, sometimes more depending on conditions, giving you repeated opportunities to refine your technique and improve as a crew. You’ll be fully involved onboard, working through different roles and building confidence in a racing environment.
Evenings are spent in Dartmouth, where the regatta atmosphere continues ashore. With organised events, social gatherings, and a busy harbour, there’s plenty going on once racing finishes. Crews often spend time together on the dock or head into town, making it as much a social experience as it is a sailing one.
For those looking to extend the experience, optional delivery legs to and from Dartmouth may be available. These passages add another dimension to the trip, offering longer sailing days and a chance to experience offshore conditions alongside the racing schedule.
Racing takes place in Dartmouth, on the south coast of Devon, centred around the River Dart and the open waters of Start Bay. The area offers a mix of sheltered river sailing and more exposed coastal conditions, making it an interesting and varied race environment.
Darthaven Marina provides a base for the event, with easy access to both the race areas and the town itself. Dartmouth is known for its maritime history and busy regatta scene, drawing sailors from across the UK each year.
Participants should have some sailing experience and be comfortable at a competent crew level or above. This ensures you can take part in onboard tasks and contribute effectively during racing.
Previous racing experience is helpful but not essential. A positive attitude and willingness to get involved are key, as much of the learning comes through taking part in the races themselves.
This regatta offers a combination of structured racing, team development, and a strong social atmosphere, making it ideal for sailors who want more than just time on the water. With multiple race days, there is a clear opportunity to build confidence and improve performance across the event.
Crews are supported by experienced race skippers who focus on creating a positive and engaging environment onboard. Alongside the racing, the social side of the regatta adds to the overall experience, making it a memorable way to be part of a well-known sailing event.
The main regatta takes place over several days, with racing typically running from midweek through to the weekend. Each day usually includes two races, although this can vary depending on conditions and class.
In addition to the racing, evenings are spent in Dartmouth where social events and regatta activities continue, creating a full schedule both on and off the water.
Racing experience is useful but not essential. As long as you have a solid level of sailing experience and feel comfortable at a competent crew level, you will be able to take part.
The format of multiple races across several days provides a strong learning environment, allowing you to build confidence and improve as the event progresses.
You will be racing on one of several well-prepared yachts used regularly for racing. These may include boats such as a Sigma 38, Jeanneau 49, First 40.7, or First 36.7.
All boats are equipped for competitive sailing, offering a proper racing experience while still being suitable for mixed-ability crews.
Yes, all crew members are encouraged to take part in sailing tasks throughout the regatta. This includes handling sails, trimming, and assisting with manoeuvres during races.
Roles may change across the event so you can experience different aspects of racing and develop a broader skill set.
Lunch is provided during training periods, along with race provisions while out on the water. This ensures you have what you need during sailing days.
Meals and drinks ashore are not included and are usually arranged individually or as a group depending on plans each evening.
Yes, accommodation onboard is included, allowing you to stay close to the action and fully take part in the event. This is often the most convenient option during a busy regatta schedule.
If you prefer to stay ashore, accommodation can be arranged separately for an additional cost.
You should budget for food and drinks ashore, as well as any personal spending during the event. Social activities may vary depending on your plans each evening.
If you choose to stay off the boat, accommodation ashore will be an additional cost.
Optional delivery legs may be available before and after the regatta, offering the chance to sail between Hamble and Dartmouth. These passages can include longer sailing periods and potentially overnight legs.
They are a great option if you want to extend your time on the water and gain additional offshore sailing experience alongside the regatta.
