Follow a guided route through Fenda da Arrábida, a rare tectonic gorge that cuts roughly 700 metres along the southern face of the Arrábida mountains above Portinho beach. Over about four hours you move through cliffs, confined passages and rocky walls using rappels, handrail climbing and a ferrata-style section, all under close guide supervision.
After meeting at Portinho da Arrábida, your guide briefs the group on kit, safety and the day's sequence before you set off into the gorge. The circuit unfolds along the full length of Fenda da Arrábida, a geomonument of limestone and schist that opens above the coastline with views toward the Atlantic.
Expect a varied mix of terrain: several rappels between roughly 10 and 30 metres, around 100 metres of handrail climbing along fixed lines, passage through a confined cave section, and a rocky wall climbed in ferrata style with cables and rungs. The pace stays steady with time to recover between technical sections, and guides position themselves at each obstacle to coach you through.
Fenda da Arrábida sits within the Arrábida Natural Park on Portugal's Setúbal coast, where forested hills drop sharply to small coves and clear water. The gorge runs parallel to Portinho da Arrábida beach, so much of the route feels close to the sea even when you are working through rock and shade inside the fenda.
Arrábida is known for its protected landscapes, quiet trails and striking geology. Completing the circuit here means moving through a landscape that is unusual even within the park, with rock formations and confined spaces that few casual walkers ever see.
You do not need prior climbing or caving qualifications, but moderate fitness and a steady head for heights help on the rappels and exposed sections. The activity suits adventurous beginners who are happy to follow guide instructions and take their time on technical moves.
Minimum age is 10. Younger participants should be comfortable in enclosed spaces and able to walk on uneven ground for several hours. If anyone in your group has relevant medical conditions or a strong fear of heights, mention it when booking so the team can advise before the day.
Guides working this route know Fenda da Arrábida intimately and run the circuit with established safety protocols, quality ropes and harnesses, and small-group oversight at every obstacle. That matters on a route where rappels, caves and climbing sections come one after another.
With decades of local guiding experience across Arrábida, Sintra and Sesimbra, the team focuses on making a demanding gorge feel achievable for first-timers while still giving seasoned adventurers a memorable half-day on one of the region's most distinctive rock features.
Meet at Rua do Portinho da Arrábida, the road above Portinho da Arrábida beach within Arrábida Natural Park. Arrive a few minutes early so the guide can check kit and run the safety briefing before the group enters the gorge.
From Lisbon, follow the A2 toward Setúbal and continue to the Arrábida coast; Portinho is well signposted within the park. Parking is available near the beach and meeting area, though spaces can fill on sunny weekends, so allow extra time in peak season. GPS coordinates: 38.469369, -8.98485.

Portinho da Arrábida
Based on Portugal's Setúbal coast, this outdoor team runs guided adventures across Arrábida, Sintra and Sesimbra — from canoeing and stand-up paddle to climbing, rappelling, coasteering and jeep tours. Days are built around national-park scenery, clear Atlantic water and well-briefed, equipment-ready sessions.
Guests join small guided groups with kit and safety cover included for the activity. Meeting points sit close to the trails, cliffs and coves used that day, so the focus stays on the experience rather than long transfers.
