Between June and July, humpback whales migrate north from Antarctica, passing along the coast of Rio de Janeiro. This five-hour sailing expedition heads offshore to observe these marine giants in their natural environment, guided by an experienced crew who understand local sea conditions and migration patterns.
The expedition departs from Marina da Glória and heads out of Guanabara Bay towards deeper Atlantic waters where humpback whales pass during their annual migration. After a safety briefing, the yacht clears the bay entrance and sets a course based on recent sightings, sea state and prevailing winds.
Whale watching is conducted respectfully and in accordance with local marine guidelines. The crew maintain safe distances and adjust positioning to avoid disturbing the animals. Sightings can include tail slaps, surface rolls and, occasionally, full breaches. As these are wild animals in open ocean, behaviour varies daily, making each expedition distinct.
During the journey, there is time to relax on deck, scan the horizon and enjoy onboard refreshments. Sea conditions offshore can be more exposed than within the bay, and movement is expected. The return leg provides views back towards Rio’s mountainous skyline before docking after approximately five hours at sea.
Departure takes place at Marina da Glória, centrally positioned within Guanabara Bay. This sheltered starting point allows for a controlled exit towards the Atlantic Ocean. The marina is easily reached from Copacabana, Ipanema and central Rio by taxi or rideshare.
The whale watching zone lies beyond the bay entrance in open coastal waters where humpbacks travel north towards breeding grounds in northeastern Brazil. This stretch of coastline offers a natural migration corridor relatively close to shore during peak season.
This is rated moderate due to extended time in open Atlantic waters. Participants should be comfortable on a moving vessel and prepared for wind, swell and sun exposure.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. The minimum drinking age onboard is 18. The yacht is not wheelchair accessible due to typical sailing vessel layout and deck movement.
Running sailing tours in Rio since 2012, this family-led operation combines professional offshore navigation with a genuine passion for life at sea. Years of experience navigating Guanabara Bay and surrounding Atlantic waters allow the crew to make informed decisions about positioning and safety during wildlife expeditions.
Continuous investment in vessels, equipment and crew training ensures that offshore departures are managed responsibly and professionally. Rather than operating high-volume excursions, the focus remains on well-run, small-group experiences with attention to safety, environmental awareness and guest comfort.
Humpback whale season typically runs through June and July, when whales migrate from Antarctic feeding grounds to warmer northern breeding areas.
Sightings are most common during this window, although exact timing can vary slightly each year depending on ocean conditions and migration patterns.
Whales are wild animals travelling through open ocean, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. The crew use recent reports and experience to increase the likelihood of encounters.
Most departures during peak season result in sightings, but natural behaviour and movement patterns remain unpredictable.
Observation is conducted responsibly, prioritising animal welfare over proximity.
Once outside Guanabara Bay, the yacht is exposed to Atlantic swell. Sea state varies daily depending on wind and weather systems.
Movement should be expected, and those prone to seasickness may wish to take preventative medication beforehand.
Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Parents remain responsible for supervision onboard.
Given the offshore setting and potential swell, children should be comfortable in marine environments.
Light layers are recommended, including a windproof jacket. Offshore wind can feel cooler than on land, even in warmer months.
Sun protection is essential, including hat and sunscreen, as exposure is prolonged and reflective from the water.
This is primarily a wildlife-focused offshore experience. Swimming is not typically part of the whale watching route due to sea conditions and safety considerations.
The focus remains on observation rather than anchoring for water access.
The maximum group size is 16 guests, with a minimum of 8 required for departure.
This smaller group size allows for clear sightlines and space on deck during sightings.
Offshore departures require favourable wind and sea conditions. If conditions are not safe, the expedition may be rescheduled.
In the event of cancellation due to weather or insufficient participants, you will be offered an alternative date or a full refund.
Bookings close 8 hours before departure, subject to availability.
As this is a seasonal activity with limited months of operation, early booking during June and July is strongly recommended.
