Expand your offshore navigation knowledge with advanced online training designed for experienced skippers preparing for ocean passages and blue water cruising. Combining flexible self-paced learning with instructor guidance, this course develops the specialist skills needed for long-range ocean navigation far beyond coastal waters.
Building on Yachtmaster Offshore knowledge, this advanced online theory course introduces the specialist navigation techniques required for long-distance offshore and ocean passages. Training focuses heavily on astro navigation, helping students understand how celestial bodies can be used for accurate position fixing far from land.
Lessons cover sextant use, time calculations, compass corrections, sun and star sights, great circle sailing and advanced ocean passage planning. Students also develop a deeper understanding of global weather systems, ocean meteorology and tropical storm awareness to support safer decision making during extended offshore voyages.
Learning takes place through structured online modules featuring animated lessons, quizzes, exercises and final assessments supported by instructor feedback throughout the course. Official RYA study materials are included, along with ongoing support by phone, email and video guidance. Successful completion represents the highest level within the RYA shorebased theory pathway and supports progression towards the Yachtmaster Ocean qualification.
Training is completed fully online, allowing students to study from anywhere while fitting lessons around work schedules, cruising plans and offshore sailing commitments. Flexible access makes it possible to revisit lessons and study gradually while developing advanced navigation understanding.
Knowledge gained during the course is designed specifically for worldwide ocean cruising and offshore commercial operations beyond coastal waters. Training supports safer long-distance passage planning and confident navigation far from land using both traditional and modern navigation methods.
This course is intended for experienced skippers with existing knowledge at Yachtmaster Offshore level. Students should already feel comfortable with offshore navigation, chartwork, meteorology, passage planning and tidal calculations before enrolling.
A computer or tablet with reliable internet access is required for online learning. Plotters and dividers are recommended for navigation exercises, while having access to a sextant can also be useful for additional practice, although it is not essential for completing the course.
Training focuses on helping experienced skippers apply advanced navigation theory confidently in real offshore situations rather than simply studying for assessments. Flexible online learning combined with instructor-led support allows students to progress steadily while developing a deeper understanding of ocean navigation and passage planning.
Courses follow recognised RYA standards while using structured online lessons, practical exercises and instructor feedback to make complex navigation concepts more approachable. Students benefit from ongoing support throughout the course along with continued access to study materials after completion for future reference during offshore passages.
This course is designed for experienced skippers preparing for long-distance ocean passages and advanced offshore cruising beyond 150 nautical miles from a safe haven.
Many students already hold Yachtmaster Offshore qualifications or equivalent experience before taking this course as preparation for ocean crossings and advanced offshore operations.
Yes. Students should already have strong offshore navigation knowledge before enrolling on the Yachtmaster Ocean Theory Course.
The course builds directly on Yachtmaster Offshore-level understanding and assumes confidence with chartwork, passage planning, meteorology and offshore navigation techniques.
Training focuses on astro navigation, sextant use, celestial position fixing, ocean meteorology, compass corrections and great circle sailing techniques.
Students also learn advanced ocean passage planning and weather interpretation skills to support safe offshore decision making during long-range voyages.
Most students spend around 40 hours completing the course, although study time varies depending on previous offshore experience and learning pace.
Flexible online access allows lessons to be completed gradually around sailing schedules, work commitments and cruising preparations.
A sextant is not required to complete the course successfully, although having access to one can be useful for additional practical understanding and personal practice.
Lessons explain the principles of sextant use and astro navigation techniques in detail, helping students understand celestial navigation concepts regardless of equipment ownership.
Successful students receive the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased Theory Certificate on completion of the course and assessments.
This recognised qualification forms the final stage of the RYA shorebased theory pathway and supports progression towards the Yachtmaster Ocean qualification.
RYA qualifications and training standards are widely recognised by training centres, cruising organisations and employers around the world.
The knowledge gained during this course is relevant to ocean navigation globally and supports both recreational blue water cruising and professional offshore operations.
