Private Canyoning in Mallorca: Gorge Blue-Sa Fosca Ravine

No. This canyon is designed for people with previous canyoning experience or a strong background in technical outdoor activities. The route includes long sections of confined space, multiple abseils, complex ropework, and sustained time in the dark.

If you’ve never canyoned before or are unsure about how you'll respond in total darkness or confined spaces, we recommend building your confidence on an easier descent such as Coanegra or Biniaraix first. Sa Fosca demands full commitment once you're inside, with no early exit options.

Sa Fosca is the only canyon on the island that includes a long underground section where no natural light enters for nearly two hours. It’s one of the most technical and visually impressive routes in Europe, with massive vertical walls, tight squeezes, and sheer cliffs.

It also has over 50 jumps, countless slides, deep gorges, siphons, and narrow rock corridors. The darkness, combined with the scale and structure of the canyon, creates an experience that’s both mentally and physically demanding—very different from the more playful or scenic canyons elsewhere on the island.

Not without a headlamp. The section known as "Sa Fosca" is completely dark, with vertical walls that close in overhead, blocking all sunlight for up to 90 minutes. This makes headlamps essential for navigating safely and seeing the terrain around you.

Your guide will check all lighting equipment before entering and carry backups. If your headlamp fails, you must be comfortable following close behind the guide and listening to instructions in the dark. It’s important that your torch is securely attached and reliable.

You need a high level of physical fitness. This route includes a 1-hour approach hike, over 5 hours of continuous canyoning, and a 1 hour and 45-minute return walk. During the canyon, you’ll scramble, climb, jump, abseil, swim, and squeeze through narrow sections—often with no rest points.

It’s essential that you feel comfortable carrying your gear for long periods and staying active for up to 8–9 hours. The dark section can be mentally fatiguing as well, especially if you’re not used to confined spaces.

All technical equipment is provided, including helmet, harness, descender, carabiners, wetsuit, booties, backpack, and waterproof containers for personal items. Your guide also carries first aid and group safety gear.

You’ll need to bring 1.5 litres of water, a sandwich or snacks, swimwear, a towel, and a complete change of clothes for after the session. Good trainers or canyoning-specific shoes are essential, as you’ll be walking and climbing on slippery rock all day. Don’t bring anything you wouldn’t want to get soaked.

From start to finish, the session lasts approximately 8–9 hours. This includes the 1-hour approach walk, 5 hours of descent, and around 1 hour and 45 minutes to hike back to the car once you exit.

The famous dark section of the canyon—Sa Fosca itself—lasts around 90 minutes. This stretch is slow-moving, technical, and must be done carefully. Your guide will ensure the group is spaced and supported throughout to keep it safe and enjoyable.

It’s crucial to discuss any concerns with your guide beforehand. Once inside the dark section, there are no escape routes. If you panic or feel claustrophobic, your guide will help keep you calm and guide you step by step until you're through.

However, if you know you struggle in enclosed or pitch-black spaces, Sa Fosca may not be the right choice. The darkness can feel overwhelming to some people, and you must be able to stay calm and follow instructions throughout.
