Few visitors experience Oslo the way locals do, and this private forest adventure offers exactly that opportunity. Combining woodland trails, lakeside scenery and a stop for traditional pastries at a forest cabin, it's a relaxed way to discover an important part of Norwegian culture.
Travelling into the hills above Oslo by train, you'll quickly leave the city behind and enter the forests of Nordmarka. The journey itself provides excellent views before the walking route begins amongst peaceful woodland trails and open natural scenery.
Reaching Tryvann Lake, there is time to enjoy the surroundings, relax on the jetty or take a refreshing swim during warmer weather. The lake is a popular outdoor spot for locals and offers a glimpse into how many Norwegians spend their free time.
Halfway through the adventure, you'll stop at a traditional forest cabin café where fresh pastries, waffles, coffee and hot chocolate are available to purchase. After the break, the route continues through beautiful forest landscapes before finishing at Woxen, where you'll board the bus back to the city centre.
Surrounding Norway's capital, Nordmarka covers a huge area of forests, lakes and walking trails that locals enjoy throughout the year. Despite being only a short journey from the city centre, the atmosphere feels peaceful and far removed from urban life.
Scattered throughout the forest are traditional cabins, swimming spots and scenic viewpoints that have become an important part of Oslo's outdoor culture. This tour explores one of the most accessible and enjoyable sections of the region.
Comfortable walking shoes or hiking footwear are recommended as the route follows approximately 6.5 kilometres of forest trails and natural terrain.
Suitable outdoor clothing should be worn according to the forecast. Children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the experience.
Rather than focusing on famous landmarks and busy attractions, the experience introduces visitors to a side of Oslo that locals genuinely enjoy. Forest walks, lakeside breaks and cabin cafés are all deeply connected to Norwegian culture and everyday life.
Led by knowledgeable local guides, the tour combines nature, culture and relaxation in equal measure. The private format also allows for a more personal experience with flexibility throughout the day.
Unlike many hiking experiences that focus purely on covering distance or reaching viewpoints, this tour is built around everyday Norwegian outdoor traditions. Spending time in the forest, stopping at a cabin café and enjoying a slower pace are all important parts of local culture.
Visitors often say this experience feels more authentic because it reflects how Oslo residents actually spend their weekends rather than following a typical tourist itinerary.
No previous hiking experience is required. The route covers approximately 6.5 kilometres on well-maintained forest trails and is suitable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness.

Known as Oslo's outdoor playground, Nordmarka is a vast forest area that surrounds the city and provides year-round recreation opportunities.
Thousands of locals visit the area every week for hiking, skiing, cycling, swimming and relaxing in nature, making it an important part of life in the capital.
Wildlife is regularly spotted throughout Nordmarka, including squirrels, birds, deer and occasionally moose.
Although sightings can never be guaranteed, your guide will point out signs of wildlife and explain more about the animals that inhabit the forest.
Yes, both the train journey into the forest and the return bus journey are included within the tour price.
Having transport arranged allows you to enjoy the experience without needing to navigate public transport independently.
