A full day dedicated to building the essential skills needed for safe and confident hillwalking in Scotland’s hills. Suitable for beginners and those wanting to refresh their knowledge, the session combines practical advice with hands-on experience in a supportive outdoor setting.
The day begins with an introduction and briefing at the meeting point, followed by time spent studying how to plan routes effectively using maps and weather forecasts tailored to mountain conditions. Practical advice on clothing and essential equipment will help you understand how to prepare for a day out, including how to layer properly and what kit is critical for safety and comfort. The session includes plenty of time to apply this knowledge outdoors, ensuring theory is matched with real experience.
During the walk, you’ll learn how to move confidently and safely over different types of ground, focusing on balance, pace, and energy management. Instruction on emergency procedures covers what to do if someone is injured or conditions change unexpectedly. You’ll practise simple skills such as setting up a shelter or signalling for help, all designed to boost your confidence in managing unexpected situations while enjoying the hills.
The Campsie Fells lie just north of Glasgow and offer a varied landscape of gentle slopes and rocky outcrops ideal for learning mountain skills. The area is known for its accessible hills, making it a popular spot for outdoor activities without the challenges of more remote mountain ranges. The surrounding countryside provides a peaceful backdrop with wide views across the Central Belt, while still being close to urban centres for easy access.
Weather in the Campsies can change quickly, providing an excellent opportunity to learn how to read and respond to mountain conditions in real time. The exact meeting point is provided after booking, ensuring a smooth start to the day and easy parking for all participants. Public transport options are available nearby for those without a vehicle, making the location accessible to a wide range of walkers.
Participants should have a basic level of fitness suitable for a day of moderate hillwalking, as the session involves walking over uneven terrain for several hours. No previous experience in navigation or mountain skills is required, but a willingness to spend time outdoors and engage with practical learning is essential.
Appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear are necessary, and a detailed kit list will be provided before the day.
The team brings together extensive personal experience and a pragmatic teaching style that adapts to each group’s needs. With a background spanning from early childhood mountain adventures to professional guiding and education, they offer well-rounded expertise grounded in real-world practice. Their approach focuses on building confidence and competence rather than following rigid programmes, making learning enjoyable and effective.
Combining a deep passion for the outdoors with practical teaching skills, they are committed to helping participants develop safe habits and a strong understanding of mountain environments. Their knowledge of Scotland’s hills is matched by a friendly and approachable manner, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, feels supported throughout the day.
Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness as the day involves walking over uneven ground for around six hours. The terrain will include some uphill sections and rough paths, so being comfortable with sustained walking is important. The pace is generally steady but can be adjusted to suit the group’s abilities.
The session is designed to be accessible for beginners as well as those with some experience, so if you have a moderate level of fitness and a willingness to learn, you will be able to keep up. Regular breaks are taken, and the instructors will ensure no one is left behind.
You will need suitable outdoor clothing including waterproofs, sturdy walking boots, and layered clothes to manage changing weather conditions. A detailed kit list will be provided before the session, which will outline all the essentials. It’s also advisable to bring a hat, gloves, sun protection, and enough food and water for the day.
If you own a map and compass, please bring them along as these will be used during the session. However, if you do not have these items, guidance will be given on how to use them, and some equipment may be available to borrow depending on availability.
No previous experience is required. The session is designed for people new to hillwalking or those who want to improve their knowledge and confidence in mountain environments. Instruction is practical and tailored to the individual’s skill level.
For participants who have some experience, the day offers an excellent opportunity to refresh and develop core skills such as navigation, weather interpretation, and emergency response. The flexible approach means everyone benefits regardless of their starting point.
The Campsie Fells provide a varied and accessible environment ideal for learning mountain skills. The exact meeting point and walk routes will be confirmed after booking, chosen to offer a good balance of terrain challenges suitable for the group’s ability.
This location is close to Glasgow, making it easy to reach while providing open hills, rocky sections, and good views to practise navigation and movement skills in real conditions. The varied landscape helps prepare participants for future adventures in different mountain settings.
Scottish weather can be unpredictable, so the session is designed to proceed in most weather conditions to give participants realistic experience. Learning how to manage rain, wind, and colder temperatures is part of building confidence in the hills.
If conditions are deemed unsafe due to extreme weather or other hazards, the organisers will contact all participants with alternative plans or rescheduling options. Safety is a priority, and flexibility is built into the schedule to accommodate changes when necessary.
