This band across the upper North Island mixes volcanic lakes, geothermal steam and surf coasts. Rotorua smells of sulphur on calm mornings and sits in Bay of Plenty region, not Waikato, which surprises some first-time planners. Waitomo's glowworm caves lie in Waikato, and the Coromandel Peninsula reaches into the sea east of Thames.
Holiday traffic clogs the road to Rotorua on long weekends, so midweek travel saves time. Mt Taranaki's summit track is alpine and weather-dependent, with snow possible even in summer near the top.
Lake Taupō fills an ancient caldera and feeds the Waikato River north towards Hamilton.
Geothermal pools in Rotorua range from public spas to natural streams with strict safety rules. Carry insect repellent in Coromandel bush walks during humid months.
Caves, geothermal country and the mountain
Waikato covers Waitomo black-water rafting and Coromandel coastal hikes. Bay of Plenty centres on Rotorua forest trails and Lake Tarawera walks. Taranaki adds summit days above New Plymouth and black-sand surf beaches.
Getting there and where to stay
Rotorua and Taupō have plenty of lodges and holiday parks. Thames opens the Coromandel loop, while New Plymouth suits Taranaki climbs. Driving from Auckland takes about three hours to Rotorua or four to New Plymouth.
Combining stops
A week can link Waitomo, Rotorua and Taupō before you turn east towards Hawke's Bay or south towards Tongariro. Taranaki fits better as a west-coast detour from Taupō or from Wellington via State Highway 3. Book Rotorua forest bike hire before you arrive on long weekends, because popular sizes sell out by Friday afternoon.
