Nothing captures Norwegian outdoor culture quite like a peaceful lakeside walk followed by time around a crackling campfire. This relaxed private experience combines nature, local traditions and delicious treats while introducing you to one of Oslo's favourite outdoor escapes.
Boarding a short train journey from central Oslo, you'll soon arrive at Sognsvann, a beautiful forest lake surrounded by woodland trails. Although it's only a short distance from the city, the area feels wonderfully secluded and offers an ideal setting to slow down and enjoy nature.
Following an easy walk through the surrounding forest, you'll gather around a lakeside campfire where your guide will introduce some of Norway's favourite outdoor traditions. You'll learn about local life in the outdoors, hear stories about Norwegian hiking culture and discover why spending time around a fire is such an important part of life here.
Alongside the campfire experience, you'll enjoy hot drinks, marshmallows and the famous chocolate many Norwegians carry on their hikes. After time to relax beside the lake, you'll return to Oslo by train feeling refreshed and with a better understanding of the country's outdoor way of life.
Located on the northern edge of Oslo, Sognsvann is one of the city's most popular recreation areas and a favourite destination for walkers, runners and families. Surrounded by forest and connected to the wider Nordmarka region, it offers easy access to nature without requiring a long journey from the capital.
Beyond the lake itself, the surrounding woodland creates a peaceful atmosphere throughout the year. Whether covered in snow, displaying autumn colours or enjoying long summer evenings, the area provides an excellent setting for experiencing Norwegian outdoor traditions.
Suitable for most fitness levels, the walking distance is approximately 2 kilometres on easy trails and paths around the lake.
Comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Children should be accompanied by an adult throughout the experience.
Focused on authentic local experiences, the guides share the traditions and customs that make outdoor life such an important part of Norwegian culture. Rather than simply walking through nature, you'll gain insight into how locals enjoy and connect with the outdoors.
Creating a private atmosphere allows the experience to remain relaxed, personal and flexible. There is plenty of time to ask questions, enjoy the surroundings and make the most of the campfire setting.
Unlike a standard sightseeing walk, this experience focuses on how Norwegians spend time outdoors. The combination of forest trails, a lakeside setting and a traditional campfire creates a much more relaxed and cultural experience.
Many guests find that the stories, traditions and simple outdoor activities provide a deeper understanding of Norway than visiting major landmarks alone.
At approximately 2 kilometres, this is one of the easiest outdoor experiences available and is suitable for most people with a normal level of mobility.

Surprisingly, Sognsvann is only around 20 minutes from central Oslo by train.
Despite its convenient location, the forest and lake surroundings feel remarkably peaceful and removed from the city.
Yes, families are very welcome and the short walking distance makes the activity accessible for many children.
The campfire element is often particularly popular with younger guests, especially when marshmallows and hot chocolate are involved.
Yes, this experience is considered both wheelchair-friendly and stroller-friendly.

Even though the walk is relatively short, temperatures can vary around the lake and forest, particularly during cooler months.
Keeping the activity private creates a much more personal atmosphere around the campfire and allows the experience to move at a pace that suits your group.
This format works particularly well for families, couples and friends who want to enjoy a relaxed outdoor experience together without being part of a larger group.
