🧭 Trip Overview

Across Mount Kenya, this experience offers two distinct paths to the summit. One focuses on reaching Point Lenana through a high-altitude trekking journey, while the other extends into a technical climb of Batian, adding a serious alpine challenge onto an already demanding route. Both options follow a structured ascent profile designed to support acclimatisation and maximise your chances of success.

Support is provided throughout by a full expedition team, allowing you to focus on moving well in the mountains rather than managing logistics. From trekking through varied terrain to preparing for summit day, each stage is planned with flexibility so that decisions can be adjusted based on weather, energy levels, and overall progression.

⭐ Why Choose Us

Qualified and experienced instructors guide every stage of the trip, combining technical climbing knowledge with a strong understanding of high-altitude environments. Their approach prioritises safety while helping you build confidence as you move through increasingly challenging terrain.

Each trip is shaped around your goals, whether that’s completing a high-altitude trek or stepping into technical alpine climbing. Flexibility is built into the itinerary, allowing the team to adapt plans when needed to give you the best possible experience on the mountain.

Day 1 – Nanyuki to Swiss Camp

Trekking – Meet in Nanyuki before a scenic drive to Chogoria Gate. From here, begin a steady 2-hour trek through forest terrain, gaining height as you move towards Swiss Camp at 3450m. The landscape gradually opens up, offering views of the transition into afro-alpine terrain.
Climbing – No technical climbing on this day. Time is spent settling in, checking kit, and preparing for the days ahead.

Day 2 – Swiss Camp to Lake Michaelson

Trekking – A longer day on foot, following a ridge with wide views into the Gorges Valley. The route climbs steadily, with a mix of terrain underfoot, before descending slightly into the Lake Michaelson campsite at 4300m.
Climbing – No technical climbing, but this day builds essential movement skills and acclimatisation ahead of higher ground.

Day 3 – Lake Michaelson to Simba Col

Trekking – A shorter but important acclimatisation day. The path climbs gradually through alpine terrain to reach Simba Col at 4550m, where you’ll rest and prepare for the summit push.
Climbing – No roped climbing yet, but this is where preparation becomes more focused, with discussions around movement, pacing, and the next stage.

Day 4 – Summit Day (Point Lenana) and Descent

Trekking – An early alpine start leads to the summit of Point Lenana at 4985m, reached in time for sunrise. After taking in the views, descend to camp for breakfast before continuing down the mountain towards the trailhead.
Climbing – For trekking-only groups, no technical climbing is included. This marks the high point of the journey before descending.

Day 5 – Technical Climb (Batian Route) (Climbing itinerary only)

Trekking – A short approach from high camp across scree and alpine terrain to reach the base of the North Face.
Climbing – Begin the ascent of Batian via the North Face Standard Route. Early pitches are climbed in cold conditions before sunrise, with steady progress across multiple pitches of rock. As the day warms, climbing becomes more fluid, with consistent movement towards the summit at just over 5200m.

Day 6 – Weather Window / Summit Attempt Continuation (Climbing itinerary only)

Trekking – Additional approach or descent movement depending on summit timing and weather conditions.
Climbing – A second day is held as a weather window to maximise summit success. If conditions align, this allows flexibility to complete the climb safely without rushing decisions.

Final Day – Descent

Trekking – A steady descent through the Mackinder Valley, gradually losing altitude and returning to the trailhead before transferring back to Nanyuki.
Climbing – No further technical climbing. Focus is on a controlled and efficient descent after the summit phase.

FAQ :

What is the difference between the trekking and climbing options?

The trekking option focuses on reaching Point Lenana, offering a high-altitude experience without technical climbing. It’s ideal for those looking to build confidence in the mountains while still taking on a serious summit.

The climbing option includes the ascent of Batian, adding a technical alpine objective. This requires more experience and introduces ropework, route finding, and sustained climbing at altitude.

Do I need climbing experience for Batian?

Yes, previous climbing experience is required. You should be comfortable on multi-pitch routes and confident handling rope systems in exposed environments.

Although guides support you throughout, the climb demands a level of independence and efficiency, especially given the added challenge of altitude.

How difficult is the altitude?

Altitude becomes noticeable as you move above 4,000 metres, affecting pace and energy levels. The itinerary is designed to help your body adjust gradually.

Guides monitor how you’re adapting and will adjust plans if needed. Staying hydrated and maintaining a steady pace are key to managing altitude effectively.

What level of fitness is required?

A strong level of fitness is needed, with the ability to walk for several hours each day. Being comfortable on uneven terrain will help you manage the demands of the trip.

Preparation should include endurance training, hill walking, and building stamina over time. Climbers should also include regular climbing sessions.

How are camps organised?

Camps are fully managed by the expedition team, meaning everything is set up before you arrive. This includes tents, cooking areas, and sleeping arrangements.

This support helps reduce fatigue and allows you to recover properly between days, which is especially important at altitude.

What happens if the weather is poor?

Weather is monitored closely, and plans can be adjusted to suit conditions. The itinerary includes flexibility, particularly for the climbing days.

If conditions prevent certain objectives, alternatives will be offered to ensure you still get a valuable experience while staying safe.
