You climb to Mount Bisoke's crater lake in Rwanda then cross into Uganda for a Bwindi gorilla trek, linking two countries in one private five-day story. Volcano views and impenetrable forest intimacy sit back to back with border formalities handled for you.
You meet at Kigali International Airport and transfer through the Virunga foothills to a lodge near Volcanoes National Park, with a briefing on pacing for altitude. Rwanda's hills look endless from the road, but your guide knows the sensible stops for coffee and photos.
Day two is the Mount Bisoke hike through bamboo and alpine vegetation to the crater lake at about 3711 metres, with a packed lunch on the trail. Day three is a scenic drive across the Cyanika border into Uganda toward Bwindi, with an easier afternoon at the forest lodge so legs recover before gorilla morning.
Day four follows the Bwindi routine of briefing, forest trek and up to an hour with a mountain gorilla family; day five drives back to Kigali for your flight. One guide and vehicle stay with you for the whole route, including border paperwork; both hikes can be muddy and steep, and porters can be hired locally.
Mount Bisoke rises to 3711 metres on the Rwanda side with hypericum and bamboo zones opening to crater views. Bwindi's Rushaga sector holds dense vine networks where gorilla families nest on steep ridges.
The Albertine Rift mist blurs country borders so peaks feel like one continuous volcanic backbone. Lodge nights split between Musanze and Bwindi gate areas to minimise dawn transfer stress.
Summit day can take four to six hours one way with altitude and mud. Gorilla day adds another steep forest push. Cardio fitness and prior hiking experience help though rangers accommodate slower walkers.
Waterproof boots, gloves and rain gear are mandatory for both countries. East African tourist visa covers dual entry when obtained in advance.
We manage Cyanika border timing, permit paperwork and lodge bookings in both countries so you do not juggle operators. One safari vehicle and guide continuity reduces handover friction.
Pre-trip messaging covers visa steps, packing for altitude and respectful gorilla etiquette. Permit fees in the package directly support habitat protection and community levies in both parks.
This expedition starts at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda where your guide meets you on arrival. We also arrange pick-up from Kigali hotels if you arrive early.
The journey finishes back at Kigali International Airport on day five unless you extend locally. East African tourist visa requirements for Rwanda and Uganda are your responsibility and we outline steps after booking.
Nights in Rwanda use boutique lodges such as Sambora Kinigi with volcano views, lava stone bathrooms and farm-to-table dining near Musanze. In Bwindi you stay at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge or similar eco-luxury property steps from the park gate with forest decks and hot showers.
Full board meals keep energy steady across border travel days. Lodge teams handle early breakfast on trek mornings while we confirm room types and any honeymoon or twin bed requests before arrival.
Request your preferred travel window through the booking form and we reply with availability for this Rwanda and Bwindi gorilla trek. Private departures are built around your party size, so sharing rough arrival dates and any fixed leave days helps us shape the route.
Once dates align we send a clear outline of deposits, permit timing and what happens next. Gorilla and cross-border products need early confirmation because permits and lodge space are limited.
This itinerary starts with a meet and greet at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, or a flexible pick-up from your hotel in Kigali if you arrive early.
You return to Kigali International Airport on the final day for onward flights. Tell us if you need a late flight buffer or an extra hotel night on arrival.
Your fee covers the core logistics described on this listing: private transport in a suitable 4x4, guiding, park fees where stated, meals and accommodation on multi-day routes, and activity permits that the product name promises.
International flights, visas, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, personal shopping and discretionary tips are not included. We can outline typical visa and insurance expectations when you enquire.
Expect a mix of vehicle time and time on your feet. Walking safaris and treks use moderate pacing with rest stops, while summit days are longer and steadier.
Share any knee, heart or altitude concerns when you book so guides can choose realistic routes and suggest porter support where available. Hydration and broken-in footwear matter more than gym credentials.
Neutral-toned clothing, a sun hat, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle are daily essentials. Sturdy boots with grip matter on forest treks and volcano slopes.
Rain gear travels with you even in dry seasons. For gorilla treks add long sleeves, gardening gloves and a small daypack; for camping or mountain nights add warm layers and a headtorch.
Multi-day packages include the meals listed in the day-by-day plan, usually full board or breakfast and lunch depending on the final travel day.
Lodges and camp chefs can often accommodate common dietary requests when we know in advance. Mention allergies or vegetarian and vegan needs at booking so kitchens can prepare.
Uganda Wildlife Authority rules govern gorilla and chimp encounters, including minimum ages, one hour with habituated gorilla families and briefing times you must respect.
We secure permits on your behalf when they are part of the package and explain briefing points the evening before each trek. Flash photography and touching wildlife are never permitted.
These itineraries are priced as private expeditions for your party rather than joining a large scheduled coach group.
That keeps vehicle space, lodge rooms and guide attention aligned with your pace. If you are a solo traveller we still run the itinerary and confirm any single-room arrangements when quoting.
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for treks and multi-day safaris and should cover medical evacuation where you walk in remote terrain.
Most visitors need a Uganda visa applied online before travel; cross-border itineraries may need an East African tourist visa. We remind you of current entry steps after booking but you remain responsible for passport validity.
The route is designed to hike Mount Bisoke in Rwanda before crossing to Bwindi in Uganda, which saves backtracking if you fly into Kigali. We meet you at Kigali International Airport and return there on the last day.
If you need to start or finish in Entebbe instead, tell us when enquiring so we can quote a different routing. Standard package pricing assumes Kigali as the gateway.
