This route links Nyungwe Forest chimpanzees, Lake Kivu, and Volcanoes National Park golden monkeys with Kigali city culture, canopy walks, tea plantations, and a Lake Kivu boat cruise. You travel in a Land Cruiser with permits and lodges arranged as a single guided loop from Kigali.
After arrival in Kigali you head south-west to Nyungwe for chimps, canopy walk, and tea experiences, then follow Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey trekking and a cultural visit near Musanze. Briefings each evening cover wake-up calls, kit for the next forest sector, and realistic drive times on mountain roads.
Your driver-guide handles permits, lodge check-ins, and daily departures while you focus on primate and lake days. Luggage stays in the vehicle between sectors so forest treks feel light.
Rwanda packs montane rainforest, volcanic slopes, and a lively capital into a compact country. Nyungwe Forest National Park in the south-west holds habituated chimpanzee communities and Africa's canopy walkway, while the shores of Lake Kivu offer boat trips between forest and volcano country.
Scenic drives link Kigali, lake shores, and forest parks on sealed and mountain roads with photo stops. Scenic stops and comfort breaks are built into longer sealed and park-road transfers on this route.
Chimpanzee and golden monkey treks involve hiking on uneven, sometimes muddy forest trails. A reasonable level of fitness and sturdy waterproof footwear are important. Rain is possible year round, so pack a light waterproof and long sleeves for forest vegetation.
Golden monkey and chimp forest walks can be steep and humid around Volcanoes and Nyungwe. Share any knee, heart, or altitude concerns before you travel so daily pacing and trail choices stay comfortable.
Experienced river guides lead canoe departures on the Lower Zambezi, setting daily paddle distances from water levels, wind, and camp locations. They share wildlife knowledge from years on the Mana flood plain and handle riverside meals, safety briefings, and camp routines each evening.
Canoes, tents, and kitchen kit travel in the fleet so island and beach camps stay self-contained on the river. You share light camp tasks while guides manage navigation, wildlife interpretation, and evening meals under the stars.
On arrival at Kigali International Airport you are met by your guide, with time to change money into local currency before transfer to your hotel. Your driver will be at the airport ahead of your flight and help with bags before the short city transfer.
Overnight at Hotel des Mille Collines or a comparable property in Kigali, with dinner at the hotel or a nearby restaurant depending on your arrival time. This is a gentle start before the longer drive to Nyungwe on day two.
After breakfast, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial on a city tour, then drive through terraced hillsides to Nyungwe National Park. Your guide confirms wake-up time, kit, and what is included for meals at the evening briefing.
In the afternoon, walk the canopy walkway and settle in at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel. Comfort stops and lodge check-ins are built into long transfer days on this route.
Early breakfast, then a guided chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe Forest with rangers. You may hear pant-hoots before you see the community.
Later, visit a tea plantation near the park before transferring to Lake Kivu and Cormoran Lodge. Comfort stops and lodge check-ins are built into long transfer days on this route.
Morning boat cruise on Lake Kivu among the islands, then drive toward Volcanoes National Park with a stop at Kopakiki Cooperative for coffee experiences. Your guide confirms wake-up time, kit, and what is included for meals at the evening briefing.
Early starts use cooler morning air for longer paddling before midday heat. Comfort stops and lodge check-ins are built into long transfer days on this route.
Trek golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park with rangers, then lunch in Musanze and an afternoon cultural experience at Gorilla Guardians Village. Your guide confirms wake-up time, kit, and what is included for meals at the evening briefing.
Treated water and cordials are supplied; cooler space may be available for drinks you bring. Comfort stops and lodge check-ins are built into long transfer days on this route.
Your last day allows shopping for crafts and coffee in Kigali, time to relax at the hotel pool or café, and a final packed lunch if your flight is later in the day. Your guide drives you to the airport in time for check-in on your outbound flight.
We recommend keeping this day free of new activities so you are rested before flying. If you need an extra night in Kigali because of flight times, ask on this safari and we can quote an extension.
Your guide meets you at Kigali International Airport on arrival day one. Hotel pickup in Kigali can also be arranged in advance.
Nights are in tourist hotels and lodges matched to each park, including a Kigali city hotel on arrival and before departure, a Nyungwe forest lodge after the canopy walk, a Lake Kivu lodge after the chimp trek, and a lodge near Volcanoes National Park before returning to the capital. Rooms are en suite with meals taken at the lodge or agreed restaurants on driving days.
Properties named on the route, such as Hotel des Mille Collines, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, Cormoran Lodge, and Classic Lodge, are confirmed when your dates are set and availability allows. If a lodge is full, a comparable standard alternative is offered so your trekking days and drive times stay the same.
Most visitors need a visa for Rwanda, often available online before travel. Check current requirements for your passport nationality.
Entry rules depend on your passport; hold the correct visa and travel documents before you fly. Early starts are common on trek and game-drive days; your guide confirms timing the evening before.
Your safari includes park entry and trekking permits for the chimpanzee day in Nyungwe and the golden monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park as stated in the tour inclusions. Your guide confirms wake-up time, kit, and what is included for meals at the evening briefing.
Trekking follows park authority rules for briefing time, group size, and time with the animals. Comfort stops are built into long road days between parks on this route.
Forest treks can involve steep, muddy paths and several hours on foot. Golden monkey trekking is usually shorter but still on mountain trails.
Your guide outlines typical walking duration and terrain at the briefing before active days. Neutral clothing and insect repellent help on savanna drives and forest walks alike.

Properties match the park sector for that night so drive times and activity starts stay practical. Weather can shift daily plans slightly while keeping the same included activities.
This route focuses on chimpanzees in Nyungwe and golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, not mountain gorilla trekking. Your guide confirms wake-up time, kit, and what is included for meals at the evening briefing.
Trekking follows park authority rules for briefing time, group size, and time with the animals. Your driver-guide stays with the same vehicle so kit and timing stay consistent across the route.
Bring waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, gloves for nettles, a light rain jacket, and a day pack for trek days. Neutral colours work best in the forest.
A hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent help on open vehicles, forest walks, and lodge evenings. Photo stops on escarpments and crater viewpoints break up otherwise long transfer legs.
The drier seasons from June to September and December to February often make forest trails easier, but treks run year round with rain possible in Nyungwe. Your guide confirms wake-up time, kit, and what is included for meals at the evening briefing.
Binoculars and a zoom lens improve wildlife and birding stops along the way. Rain gear and a warm layer help on open vehicles and misty forest mornings.
Many family groups travel together on private safaris. Gorilla and chimp treks have minimum age rules set by park authorities, and long road days suit older children and teens best.
Park authorities set minimum ages for some treks; share ages in advance for sensible daily pacing. Guides carry basic first-aid kits; bring personal medication in your day pack on treks.
Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is strongly recommended for international safaris, including cover for evacuation if you fall ill in remote areas. Your guide confirms wake-up time, kit, and what is included for meals at the evening briefing.
Arrange cover that includes medical evacuation for remote areas before you depart. Cultural visits and community walks use modest dress; your host explains local customs beforehand.
