Warm up in a wood-fired lakeside sauna on a frozen Arctic lake, then cool off in the snow or try an optional ice bath under the winter sky. The evening starts with hotel pickup and a scenic drive through Swedish Lapland, with chances to pause for northern lights if they appear along the route.
After collection from your hotel, you travel by minibus to a lakeside sauna site about 30 metres from the frozen shore. The drive itself can double as a northern lights outing: if the aurora shows during the journey, the group may stop to watch, though sightings are never guaranteed.
On arrival, gather in a wooden grill hut where hotdogs sizzle over an open fire while the sauna heats. You then move to a unisex changing area before entering the wood-fired sauna. Swimwear is welcome, and traditional Scandinavian sauna culture is optional rather than expected. An experienced guide supports anyone who wants to try the ice bath, and you can also cool off in the Arctic snow beneath the stars.
The experience runs at a lakeside sauna in the wilderness around Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. The simple wooden sauna sits close to the frozen shoreline, framed by open winter landscape and dark skies that suit aurora watching when conditions allow.
Hotel pickup covers Abisko, Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi, so you do not need your own vehicle for the evening. Exact timing and routing can shift with weather, road conditions and where the best aurora viewing might be on the night.
No sauna or ice bath experience is needed. The activity is very easy in terms of physical effort, though you should be comfortable with heat, cold water if you choose the ice bath, and changing in a shared unisex space.
Children aged 7 and over are welcome when accompanied as required. Sauna heat and any ice bath are at your own risk; speak to the guide if you have heart conditions, are pregnant or have concerns about temperature extremes.
This is a rare chance to sauna on a frozen lake in the Arctic, with transfers, towel, cold drink and a fireside hotdog included. Small groups keep the evening personal, and an experienced sauna enthusiast guides the session safely.
The outing blends relaxation, local culture and winter landscape in one evening. Optional ice bathing, snow cool-downs and aurora stops on the drive add extra magic when the skies cooperate, without rushing the sauna itself.
Pickup is included from hotels in Abisko, Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi. Abisko collections are usually around 16:30, with Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi slightly later depending on the route. Your guide confirms the exact window for your date.
Wear warm layers for the drive and bring a change of clothes plus optional swimwear for the sauna. Be ready in the lobby so the group can leave on time for the lakeside site.
No. The guide explains how the wood-fired sauna works and supports anyone who wants to try the optional ice bath. Beginners are welcome, and you can stay at a pace that feels comfortable.
If you are new to hot and cold contrast bathing, take breaks, drink the included cold drink and ask the guide for tips before entering the ice bath.
Swimwear is optional. The session follows Scandinavian sauna culture where many guests sauna without swimwear, but wearing swimwear is fully acceptable if that feels better for you.
Changing takes place in a unisex changing room, so bring whatever makes you comfortable for moving between the sauna, snow and changing area.
Your fee covers hotel pickup and drop-off in Abisko, Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi, the guided sauna session, a towel, a cold drink and a hotdog to grill at the fire. Vegetarian hotdogs are available on request.
Mention any food allergies when arranging your date so the team can prepare appropriately. Personal clothing and travel insurance are not included.
Yes. Collection and return are included from hotels in Abisko, Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi. Abisko pickups are typically around 16:30, with other towns slightly later on the route.
Be ready in the lobby at the confirmed time with warm layers and your change of clothes so the minibus can depart smoothly.
Yes, the ice bath is optional. The guide walks through safe entry and timing for anyone who wants to join, and you can skip it and cool off in the snow instead.
Ice bathing and sauna heat are at your own risk. Tell the guide about any medical conditions or concerns before you enter the water.
The drive to and from the sauna can include aurora stops if the lights appear, and dark skies at the lakeside improve your chances compared with town light pollution. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Cloud cover, moonlight and solar activity all affect what you see. The evening remains worthwhile for the sauna, fireside food and Arctic setting even if the aurora stays hidden.
Bring a change of clothes and optional swimwear, plus warm layers for the van and any outdoor stops. A towel is provided, so you do not need to pack your own.
Comfortable clothing for the sauna itself is enough; the guide handles the practical side once you arrive at the lakeside site.
Yes, from 7 years old. The activity is very easy, but children still need adult supervision around the fire, sauna and any ice bath area.
Ensure younger guests have warm clothing for the drive and a sensible approach to heat and cold. Parents should decide whether ice bathing is appropriate for their child.
The tour may be cancelled if participant numbers are too low or weather is too harsh for a safe, enjoyable outing. Your guide will stay in touch on the day if plans change.
Keep your phone reachable on the contact details you share with the guide so you receive updates about timing or cancellation promptly.
Plan for around four hours from pickup to drop-off. The core sauna window is roughly three hours, usually between about 17:30 and 20:30 depending on your pickup town.
End times are approximate and can shift with road conditions, aurora stops, group pace and weather. Abisko guests typically leave earlier to fit the shared route.
